Hurricane Dangers Stressed

COURT HOUSE - Lyndon Simmerman, Coordinator of Emergency Management for the county. was among those attending a seminar conducted by Dr. Neil Frank. Director of the National Hurricane Center, at Governor’s Island. New York, July 1. Dr. Frank's topic was: The Next Northeast Hurricane; What to Expect and he conducted the session for Region II of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, comprising New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, DR. FRANK EMPHASIZED the dangers of construction too close to the shoreline in hazardous areas. His talk was illustrated with slides showing before-and-after pictures of localities sustaining hurricane damage. "There is no’such thing as a hurricane-proof

house," Dr. Frahk emphasized. He described the techniques used in spotting and tracking hurricanes, and said that, in his opinion, wfhile technological advances in this field have not greatly increased in recent years, there has been considerable increase in the vulnerability of shore areas to storm damage. THERE IS A continuing trend, he said, to build dangerously fclose to the shoreline, with an increase in construction of condominiums and highrises in this region. Dr. Frank explained the principles of "storm-surge” to his audience. The wall of water dissipates quickly after striking the shoreline, its power rapidly diminishing without affecting upland areas, but devastating the shoreline.

Destroyed By Fire STONE HARBOR - The Volkswagen van driven by Mrs. William Phillips of 56th St., Avalon, Was destroyed after it caught fire while she was driving' south on Third Ave. here last Friday morning. Mrs. Phillips turned onto 86th St. and ran into a residence to call firemen when she discovered smoke pouring into the van. When fire-fighters arrived four minutes later, the vehicle was a mass of flames. • ACCORDING TO firemen, the magnesium engine was burning and they used water to lower the ignition point so it would stop self-igniting and threatening the forward gas tank. A frontend loader was called in to dam up and contain water possibly containing oil and gasoline; attempts to turn the van over to facilitate fire-fighting wefe unsuccessful, and flames kept shooting out from beneath the vehicle until the burning magnesium was finally ex^ tijoguished. —M'Ellen Rowland
