School Attendance Policy Affirmed
bv Bob Shilts The Lower Cape May Regional School Board provided school administrators a vote of confidence last wepk, standing, firmly behind their decision not to permit four seniors to graduate who had failed to meet the district’s attendance policy. After meeting last Thursday with students, parents and administrators involved in the matter, the board voted to adhere to its
policy, and .effectively denied graduation credit to the four students. It was the last step in the local appeal process for the parents and childen before the issue would go to the state commissioner of Education. Roadwork in the vicinity of the Cape May County Airport will require closing part of Breakwater Rd. between Seashore Rd. and Shunpike for the next two weeks. Motorists who usually use Breakwater Rd. have to detour via Tabernacle Rd. Last week it was incorrectly printed that motorists entering the airport industrial complex should do so via Weeks Landing Rd. They should use Shunpike.

sultants are continuing their efforts to solve the dilemma. The problem is 150% better than it was.” "THE TIME the effluent remained in the pipes from 3rd ,St. down to 32nd St. caused it to become septic, meaning it produced hydrogen sulfide,” he explained. One potential solution Norkis described involved the pumping of the effluent from the 20th Street pumping station through the 20" force main instead of the 12" main from 20th to 32nd St. “This change enabled the injection of additional hydrogen peroxide at this point in the force main and has apparently solved the odor problem that was occurring downstream at the 32nd Street pumping station," Norkis stated in a news release. Explosion, Fire CAPE MAY - The Cape May Auto Sound garage adjacent to the Schellenger’s Landing Bridge here was damaged around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday morning when the gas tank of a car inside the small structure apparently exploded, blowing out a portion of ’ the front cinderblock wall. policy stipulating that students can’t miss more Ahan 15 days of class ai still receive graduation credit is based on slate mandated attendance requirements that became effective in September. Mr Keller indicated the students in question all missed in excess of 15 days — at least one over 30 — without ligitimate reasons. While the policy will be maintained, , the superintendent said Friday it will definitely be looked at in an effort to simplify and clarify some of the language. "THIS IS THE kind of policy that will probably be re-examined and changed every year," he said. Emphasizing that it won’t be made less "stringent." the administrator asserted the policy will be made as "crystal clear as possible so that people understand it and believe it." Board policy chairwoman Arlene MacDonald acknowledged Friday that review of the policy — aimed at putting the regulations in laymen's terms — will begin immediately. She said the amended policy will be ready in time
for the beginning of the new school year While refusal to allow the students to graduate raised some questions about the policy, school ad ministrators contend that since the new regulations went into effect last September attendance at the high school has improved significantly. According to Mr. Keller, attendance throughout the year ran about 90 per cent. IN- OTHER school mat ters, it was reported that failure of the legislature last week to restore more than $641,000 in state aid to education will result in the Regional district losing an additional $16,000 in revenue that has already been included in its finalized 1982-83 budget. Superintendent Keller told the newspaper Friday that the recent cut brings this year's total loss of anticipated state aid to about $30,000 "At this time we're not going to have to cut programs or staff," he said He added, however, that funding problems could result later in the year if the state cuts more aid to schools come November.
"We’re going to have to next 12 months," the economize in all areas the superintendent asserted
