“Jersey Cape NATURALLY BY ANNE GALLI I seem to spend an inordinate amount of my life driving back and forth on the Garden State Parkway. To break the monotony at this time of year I "weed watch”. What, you may ask. is "weed watching"? Well, it’s the ultimate challenge for an amateur botanist involving keen eyesight and split second decision making because it is basically wildflower identification at 55 m.p.h.

If you look out your car window at the grass strip between the road and the trees you'll see innumerable splotches of orange, white, pink, purple, blue and. if you're lucky: red — the blossoms of a parade of wildflowers. "My weed watching" has been particulraly good the last-couple of years. Seems that the .road department has been showing some restraint and cutting the roadsides less often. This allows the plants to grow to a size sufficient to bloom, gladdening the hearts of flower lovers The current colors belong to yarrow, milkweed, butterflywecd, vetch, wild rose, filaree, hawkweed, field thistle and various clovers, to nme a few. (Anne Galli is the public education coordinator at the Wetlands Institute. The drawing of a butterfly weed is by Marion Glaspey.)
