Beach Buildup To Begin

CKEAN CITY - ,One million cubic yards of sand, an amount equivalent to 33,000 large dump trucksful, will be pumped onto city beaches starting in late July. The project will cover 2Mi - miles from Morningside Rd. on the north end of the Island to 21st St., according to the city’s senior environmental specialist, Stephen Gabriel. THE PROGRAM WILL add approximately 200 feet of sand to existing beaches and cost $54 million, funded 75 percent by the state and 25 percent by the municipality. The impact on this season’s tourist industry will be minimal as only one beach will be affected at a time. Sand will be pumped from Bay bottom to

beaches by the american Dredging Co., working round-the-clock to accomplish the job quickly. The build-up will be especially dramatic in the downtown area, where the city's 53-year-old Music Pier at Moorlyn Terr, will be placed above the high water mark for the first time ih memory. ' This will greatly reduce the wear and tear on the underpinning oil the Pier and cut maintenance costs, Gabriel noted. / THE PROJECT WILL be completed by early October. In the spring and fall of 1983, Gabriel will supervise the planting of dune grass and installation of snow fence along fhe area. The dune grass planting has been successful in other sections of the Island.

Root systems spread ouL—like a spider’s web and hold the sand in place, thwarting erosion, Gabriel noted. •* Beaches where dredging, takes place should be a tourist attraction in themselves and a mecca for sidewalk engineers, said Gabriel. The dredge pipe will be 24 to 30 inches in diameter and watching the sand gush out will be quite a spectacle. GABRIEL HAS AUSO initiated the piling of usod Christmas trees on beaches to build dunes and last January 2,500 were buried to create natural buffers. The Ocean City reclamation program is the first to be implemented under the State’s Shore Protection Master Plan adopted last fall. The renovating of bulkheads which must be completed prior to dredging is now underway. Cadets Needed RIO GRANDE - The Rescue Squad needs cadets.
