Landfill Cost Cut Sought
SWAINTON - The Cape May County Municipal Authority has awarded a $17,000 contract to Camp, Dresser and McKee of Boston and New York to provide value engineering review of the design and costs of the n£w sanitary landfill planned for construction. / MUA Commissioner William F.X. Band, who headed the committee that interviewed the four engineering firms that made presentations said, “Their task is to review the preliminary design created by the MUA's design consultants on the project, and make recommendations on specific ways to reduce the cost of constructing and operating the landfill.’' THE CONTRACT awarded Wednesday was 20 percent less than- the staff estimated, Band reported. "We know of no other landfill project in the county where value engineering has been used to reduce their capital and operating costs." The value engineering work is expected to start
the first week in August. The new landfill, to be located on the Wood-, bine/Upper Township border, is scheduled to open in the Spring of 1983 TED O'NEILL, MUA Solid Waste Manager, also announced that the N.J. Green Acres Program may participate in the acquisition and recreational development of 108 acres of buffer zone surrounding the MUA's proposed 360 acre landfill site in Woodbine. DEP Commissioner Hughey has asked the Green Acres Program to assist counties in the acquisition and recreation reuse of new and terminated landfills in the state. Green Acres will not participate in the acquisition of the landfill area, but will provide 50 percent matching funds for the ac* quisition and recreation development of necessary buffer zones. O'NEILL REPORTED a 40 percent increase in recycling activities during June compared to May.
Set To Join Recycling
SWAINTON - Middle Township has become the seventh Cape May County municipality to join the recycling program being directed by the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority, Diane M. DeMeo, Recycling Coordinator, announced. The date for the start of recycling in Middle Township has not been set, DeMeo said. However. Del Haven will be the first area
to be served by curbside collection of newsprint ahd aluminum and the pickup will be the first and third Wednesdays of each month Middle Township's recycling hot line telephone number will be 465-5107. Newsprint should be bundled and tied with string. Aluminum should be placed in reusable cartons or in plastic trash bags, DeMeo stated.
