(Photo by Doris Ward) HCII.IHMi I'SKIf by Capo May Kiwanis Club nnco was a lifosavinn slalion. i» * Tho waters off the coast of New Jersey have always been busy with marine traffic Sailing ships loaded wirti valuable merchandise made trips to and from China, the Caribbean,and other ports, passing the shores of Cape May County Alexander Hamilton began the Revenue Marine in 1790. which became the i^S Revenue Cutter Service, the forerunner of the Coast Guard One of its duties was to save life and property at sea. ant}'in 1878, Congress created the Lifesaving Service as a Bureau of the Treasury Dept A number of Lifesaving stations were installed along the coast in Capo May County Today, most of these Coast Guard Stations have been given up and arc* used for other purposes Before more sophisticated methods of navigation were invented, many of these ships were wrecked 1 in storms or faulty manuevering. Towards the end of the 19th century, when the barrier beach Islands were becoming populated, concerned volunteers joined to help the victims.
