On a sunrjy day in mid winteMrTlhe heart of a city, one can hear one of the earliest signs of approaching spring: a cheerful, upbeat warble coming from the top of a building. A careful look will reveal a small bird with a bright splash of red color perched on a roof proclaiming that, come spring, it will have a nest under nearby eaves, or in the ivy climbing the building, or perhaps in the shrubs of a garden. This is the house finch For those who havt eyes and ears
for such things, it is one of the bright spots of city Kfe.
House finches are recent arrivals to this area and they show every sign of,being as successful as the pigeons, starlings and house sjarrows that have preceded them as introduced birds. The house finch is nativ4to Western United States where it has long earned its name by building its[bouses on or near human nests In 1940 some of these birds, were illegally^nipped east for sale as cage birds. Some pet dealers on Long Island./baring prosecution for selling native birds, released the finches. The first observation of house finches nesting in the Epst was made in 1943 at Babylon. New.York. Since then they have spread rapidly, especially in urban and suburban areas, and they now nest from Maine
to Mississippi. ’ ,
Most people welcome the house finch as a colorful and ipelodious alternative to the house (English) sparrow. However, they grtfpests in some California orchards and may prove similarly noxio® # to eastern fruit growers. It will £ many years before their impact can be fully appraised, and if it is judged to be positive, they will be one of the rare exceptions among introduced - wildlife which is often greeted enthusiastically at first, as were starlings and carp, but which soon wears out the welcome. , . . Take a sparrow and dip it in strawberry juice and you have a male house finch. The female is a very heavily streaked little bird, lacking the red tints. They are often confused with the very similar hative'purple finch, also a common bird at winter feeders However, the purple finch goes further north to breed, which simplifies identification in the summer. In other seasons the male purple finch can be distinguished by its raspberry color which is diffused over muth of its body rather than being confined to the head, breast and rump areas as in the house finch. The female purple finch has a clearly marked facial pattern, unlike the plain faced female house finch. (The illustration is by Marion Glaspcy.)
