Summer Symptoms
Hospital Expansion None Too Soon
COURT HOUSE — Recurring symptoms in part responsible for the multi-million dollar expansion and modernization of Burdette Tomlin Hospital — are being experienced by Cape May County's only hospital. , "The hospital has been at full capacity several times this month and the emergency services unit has been extremely busy on ajmost every day during July." stated hospital administrator William H. Waldron HI. "To meet this increased demand for medical care which occurs when our summer population swells to almost one-half million, the Pediatric Unit has been converted for selected adult admissions with pediatric patients being given admissions precedence." THE HOSPITAL administrator noted that a distinct increase in asthma patients, patients with upper respiratory problems and coronary patient increases, occurred during the heat spell Referring to the initial phase of construction on the hospital's "Patient Tower," Mr Waldron pointed out, "The fund drive theme, Looking Toward Tomorrow. ..Today, is apparent in the building foundation which will support future ex-
pansion of the five-sjory patient tower to eight, floors. Our long range plans provide for the addition of patient beds in direct relationship to population increases which we nbw experience and projected increases " FUNDING FOR construction of the tower, doubling the size of the emergency room and modernization of the existing pa tient care units of the hospital is complete less the $15 millibn goal of the fund driVe. Weather Still Key to Crowds
All it takes is a prolonged spell of heat and humidity to bring a soggv public flock ing like lemmings to the cooTing winds and waters of the shore. That was proved when record-breaking traffic poured (brought the Egg Harbor Toll Plaza of the Atlantic City Expressway on the weekend of Jtfiy 17-VB, with 65.774 vehicles passing the plaza Saturday. July 17, and 65,414 Sunday JulyflB, well abovethe' previously recorded peaks of about 60,000 "Weather fas definitely a factor in in-
fluencing the record traffic," said Clyde D Fear, Expressway executive director. "While Atlantic City casinos are an important factor in increasing traffic volume on the Expressway, we’ve noted that marked traffic fluctuations are directly related to weather conditions. "THIS IS PARTICULARLY evident at the Egg Harbor Plaza, where motorists from the Philadelphia metropolitan area pass, not only en route to Atlantic City, but also on the way to a link with the Garden State Parkway and the Cape IVJay County (Page 14 Please)

MliA: User Charges or Court
SWAINTON - The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority last Wednesday directed its solicitor to prepare court action against Wildwood Crest if borough officials fail to enact a user charge resolution by August 5. "Hopefully," MUA chairman Charles Hathaway said, "it won’t be necessary, but we must protect ourselves and the other participating municipalities and users if they don't paijs the ordinance by that time "
August 5 is the date of the Inst public hearing on the state's proposed 1982 priori ty list that now places Cape May County projects in position to receive $63 million in federal construction grant funds According to George Marinnkis. MUA executive director, the federal and state regulation* require the proposed user charge methodology be defined in a formal enactment by all participating municipalities before they will fund the
"I AM VERY PLEASED with the < passage of this legislation." said Hughes, who serves on the Coast Guard Subcom■mittee "The Coast Guard plays a major role in protecting lives and property ft sea, and in stemming the flow of illegal drugs into the country "At a time when record amounts of illegal narcotics are flowing into the U S . it is senseless to further cripple the Coast Guard's ability to intercept these drugs through arbitrary budget cuts The Coast Guard must haVe adequate resources to do the job which the American public ex pects," the Ocean City lawmaker said. According to Hughes, in order to have a major impact on the importation of narcotics. the Coast Guard must interdict bet ween 50 and 70 percent of the drugs However, because of present budget con straints, only 15 percent of illegal drug im ports are being seized by the (’oast Guard, he said IN THE MEANTIME.
