recently in an extraordinary effort to secure up to $63 million in federal
funds.
The July 15 deadline was met after the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection decided four months ago to require that projects be prepared for funding by , segments. Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority Chairman Charles B. Hathaway
stated.
•THE REDUCTION of federal dollars for wastewater treatment projects was given as the reason." Hathaway remarked "Our staff and our consultant. PQA Engineering Co., embarked on an accelerated program to address all of the grant application requirements in order to be ready to qualify for as many federal dollars as possible for the construction of our two remaining projects, the Wildwood/Lower and Seven Mile Beach/Middle.

THE DESIGN OK Ihe two segmented projects must now be reviewed by the federal and state agencies prior to the September 30 end of the federal fiscal year, according to George Marinakis, MUA executive director. "If the plans are approved, we co\ild receive as much as $63 million over the next two fiscal years "We are high on the slide’s priority list."
Marinakis said. "The Wildwood/Lower Region is 5 and the Seven Mile Beach/Middle Region is 6. Of the 250 projects listed, only about 17 projects are slated to be funded and we want to be among the few pfojects receiving financial aid." MARINAKIS ,jSAID the two projects represented the largest construction projects in the tcountry’s history and therefore, would require a large work
force.
Two grant applications were filed. The one for the Wildwood/Lower Region to serve North Wildwood, Wildwood. West Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest includes a treatment plant, interceptors, ocean outfall and pumping statiohs at a cost of $65 million. "THE FEDERAL grant for which we are applying is for $44 million, better than 65 percent of the cost. That leaves the local share to cost $21 million." Daniel Kelly, deputy project director. noted. The Seven Mile Beach/Middle Region project to serve Sea Isle City, Av^lor^and Stone Harbor includes an interceptor system, ocean outfall and three pumping stations. The existing treatment plants will be connected to the new conveyance and disposal system/K&Hy explained. ^ "THE TOTAL^OST of $29 million reqmres $19 million federal funding and
$10 million local funds," Kelly said. “The total cost of the two regional projects together is estimated to be $93 million with $63 million coming from the federal
government. We also are applying for supplemental state grants which, if received, would further reduce the local share of . the project costs."

Gty to Acquire Rest of Beach
CAPE MAY - City Council passed a resolution Monday night to acquire through condemnation the remaining parcels of beach west of the Convention Hall. The city owns three quarters of the beach property in that area now and will possess all of it. Acquisition costs will be about $200,000, according to a recent appraisal. About half of that will be financed • through a bond ordinance that was passed in 1978 and the other half will come through the Green Acres program. Negotiations for acquisition of the property have been taking place for some time.
IN OTHER business, Joseph Anderson presented • to Council a petition with the signatures of 355 residents who asked the city to rezone two lots on Pittsburgh Ave. currently the, subject of a controversial Planning Board hearing, to residential. The Wawa food company seeks to erect a -*nre there. "WE TRUST this action will be further indication of our desire to have the Village Greene area remain a completely residential zone." stated the petition. which Anderson said was signed by residents from all sections of the city.
