This past week was typical hot end-of-July, middle-of-the-summer, sort-of-a-lull-in-fishing-type week. Up until Friday. As I checked around Thursday. Jim Wallace of Jims Bait & Tackle told me that the big blues were being "picky" during the day, but the night time chummers were doing well; also that the Miss Chris (Cpt. Frank Speigel > was staying on blues while the other party boats were going for flounder on the Ocean ffont. On Friday everything changed Wallace told me everything picked up, and that Jim Crayjack on the Our Pal had gotten two white marlin; and then Walt at South Jersey Marina called and told me the same tale except to say that Jim had gotten one white in Wilmington ca nyon and one white in Baltimore canyon — so he really covered some sea after those prizes. Walt also said that bluefishing at night was booming, and that 35 anglers on the Holiday got 250 slammer blues on Thursday night, and in the daytime Friday Cpt. Jim Cicchitti on the Starlight had had a mess of big 6lues in the 10-to-l2 lb. range. THEY ALL AGREED that flounder fishing .out front had been picking up in popularity. These are not the small see-through flatties of a year ago, but mostly in the 3-1/2 to 5-lb. range. Cpt. Tom Roberts on the My Gal had 45 with two men fishing, and Cpt. Jay Beecroft on the Bonito had 36 nice flounder for his party Friday night at the Lobster House I fan into Cpt. "Izzy" Sorace. and mate Jim Todd from the Five Star, and they’d had a big day for their party on bluefish. They said they loaded up early, and had a box full of 10-to 15-pounders by 10 o’clock, and that they were going marlin fishing Saturday. IN FACT* there were quite a lot of people who went to the canyons Saturday. It was the Challenge
Cup Tournament between Ocean City Md. Marlin Club and the Cape May Marlin & Tuna Club. The hot man so far in this contest was Emmet Sheridan on the Rochaway. He had one white on Saturday, and at about 1:30 he’d caught three more, but it’s still too early to give a good report on that contest; more on that next week. Joe Halbruner. Lou Jacobs, Dr. G.B. Martinez, and I decided to try our luck Saturday afternoon, and after going down the canal, we joined the fleet down in the Rips Tom , Roberts on the My Gal was getting ready to leave as we arrived He had a nice catch of flatties for his party, and as we were leaving the dock Pat Miraglio and Bill Lepper ,otf the Cfopd Nine pulled with a nice catch of dooPhat flounder from the £ep water around the ferry buoys. WE HAD almost gone up
the Bay, because Cpt. Nate High reported that a couple of girls caught four* nice weakfish off of High Beach, but the tide was against us. The upper Bay should start to produce weakies soon Cpt. Mark Elliott came in with a nice catch of mixed weakies and flounder Saturday fishing out near the can buoy. The weakies were mostly pad-size, but Cpt. Mark said 1^ had one good sized weakfish. I went to see Cpt. High Ai Sunday, and he figures yfe ought to ,get some, ^ood Bay weakfitffiing in August. (W party Saturday got two qairly nice sized flounder, and five or six hice sea bass, but we were a little late for the good fishing. The big blues took over the Ocean again Saturday, and Bill at Jim’s Bait and Tackle was telling about a fellow who ran into a school, and after loading up a couple of times on surgical tubes, found he

I don’t know how many of you read the write up about Len Guthrie saving the little girl from being kidnapped, and then going and running into the'car of the fellow who tried to kidnap her, but it really shows how local people care. I’ve written about Len a few times in the past, and told about his taxidermy business. He caught his first black drum last year, and mounted a nice fiderunner for me. and I’ve gotten to know him real well. Thanks. Len, for caring about people, and for daring to get involved.
