I was flipping through a field guide to the birds of East and Central Africa and noticed that many of the herons and egrets resembled our own species. In fact, one of our commonly seen small white egrets — the cattle egret — is the very same species. The saga of the success and geographic expansion of this unique heron species is an interesting one.
The cattle egret is a native of the African continent where it follows the vast herds of grazing animals, feeding on insects stirred up as the herds move across the plains. The range expansion of the cattle egret found them in South America in 1930 where they first appeared in British Guiana. Less than twenty years later the birds had spread throughout Urinam. Venezuela and Columbia. How/did they get to South America? N0 one knows for sure. The most plausible theory is that they were wind assisted and, being strong flyers, could have crossed the Atlantic between the bulge in Africa and the shoulder of South America.
In April 1952 the first cattle egret in North America was found in Sudbury Valley in Massachusetts. In May of that year, the first two in New Jersey were discovered in McPhearson’s cow pasture in Cape May County. Today, cattle egrets can be seen throughout the county in pastures, along the parkway and occasionally in the marshes. They are easily distinguished from other white herons by their small size and by the orange-buff coloring on backs, breasts and
crowns during the breeding season.
