WASHINGTON. DC. - Congressman Bill Hughes (I)-NJ) has expressed serious reservations about the proposed deployment of American military troops
into Lebanon.
In a letter to the White House. Hughes urged President Reagan to exercise extreme caution in making any decision that could result in U S troops' being senUnto Lebanon. ••INTfeltPoilN'G 0.8. military personnel between sworn adversaries on foreign soil fs a course of action fraught with grave dangers." Hughes said. "Nothing I have seen or heal'd to date could justify exposing our troops to that
type of peril."
Hughes praised Administration efforts to settle the conflict \n Ixibanon. but said that some other multinational force not involving the superpowers could better oversee the safe exit of surrounded Palestinian guerillas in
Beirut
"WE MUST recognize that this is a region rife with anger, frustration and bitterness that could easily be directed at U.S. troops attempting to . police an orderly withdrawal of the PLO forces." Hughes said, Hughes added that no matter what agreements may be reached with PLO leader Yasir Arafat or the Lebanese government, no one could guarantee that all of the' different individuals aid factions, including thOM even more radical than the PLO. would abide by any evacuation agreemdfit. "The presence of our troops could easily invite hostile or terrorist acts," Hughes said. "Above all, we want to avoid adding Americans to the death count."
