AVALON - The beach here was the scene of spirited competition as borough beach patrol members competed with one another to win the right to represent the borough in the Tri-city, Dutch Hoffman and South Jersey Races. During the annual Gen. E.V.H. Bell Memorial Races, the doubles crew team of Jeff Jones and Steve O'Malley won the David J. Kerr Jr. memorial trophy in the 1 1/2 mile race with a time of 15:11. The trophy has been donated by friends to honor Dave for his . accomplishments as an Avalon lifeguard and South Jersey rowing champion. Beach Run

IN THE 0980 season Dave, a be%ch patrol lieutenant, won the Dutch Hoffman, Tri-City, South Jersey and the 22 mile island row with his partner Daniel O'Malley. Dave died last year, and as a tribute this trophy was present for the first time. Second in the race were Dan O’Malley and Pete Soderman and third were Joe Mullray and Jeff Cummings. - Gridiron Sign-ups - The County Junior Football League will hold sign-ups for boys who want to play peewee and midget league football. All boys 9 to 14, between 65 and 135 pounds, are requested to sign up at the following locations: Avalon/Stone Harbor, Avalon Community Center, noon3 p.m., Aug. 11-12-13; Middle Township, Memorial Field, 6 p m., Aug. 16; Lower Township, Recreation Center, 9 a m.-3 p.m., Aug. 9, 10, 11, 12, 13; Upper Township, Caldwell Park, 9-11 a.m., Aug. 7th. ACCORDING TO League Secretary Bob Hentges, the county football league comprises teams from Ocean City, Avalon/Stone Harbor, Middle Township, I,ower Township and Upper Township. It is hoped that Cape May City will field a team, and at least one team from the Wildwoods is sought, Hentges said. The peewees are ages 9-12, weighing 65 to 95 pounds. The midgets are 9 to 14, weighing between 85 and 135 pounds. Insurance and equipment are supplied by the various teams and recreation departments. There are presently eight peewee and five midget teams in the league.
SEA ISLE CITY - Seven participants iq the first Annual Jesse Owens Games meet made a trip to one of 14 regional meets at Villanova Athletic Field recently. The city’s representatives were: Joey Farina, Shannon fcarrity, Kevin Gillespie, Mark Koochembere, Mike Koochembere, Jim Moroney and Daren Urbaezowski. Joey Farina took a 3rd Place Olympic Style Medal in the Group I Baseball Throw.

COURT HOUSE - The second annual “Rotten Sneaker’’ contest, sponsored by the Middle TVp. Recreation Dept, Smith Family Bootery and J.S. Raub Shoes, will be 7 p.m Wednesday, Aug. II, at the Leroy May Community Center, Romney Place amk Magnolia Dr. Sneakers will be judged in five categories: soles, uppers, tongue, laces and crowd appeal, according to Gregg Arnold, recreation director. Lauded CAPE MAY - A commendation was given Robert J. Smeltzer, the city’s director of civic affairs and recreation, in a resolution passed by City Council Monday night Smeltzer, who served as a p^rt-time recreation supervisor from 1973 to 1975 before assuming his present post, was lauded “for his energetic pursuit of the work ,81 hand, his innovative expansion of the scope of his job.” Council extended its appreciation of his contributions' “both within fin'd outside the call of duty.”
