A fellow said to me, “Come on, what are you going to write about this week. You know fishing if off?” Well, I can’t quite agree with him. It is true that fishing isn't going at the wild, rapid pace it was a few weeks ago, but it is still good, and getting better. Take for instance the Ocean City Challenge Cup Tournament I talked about last week. There were a lot of marlin tal^en, but as Cpt. Dick Weber said, “Those bad guys from Ocean City, Md. picked up all the marbels.” The score was 9 to 4, and the Cape May Marlin and Tuna Club was

on the board because of Kismet Sheridan and his RocKnltiy. THE FIRST DAY he had one marlin, and the second day he had three. On Ocean City's side the Etcapade had two the first day and three the second, and four other club boats contributed one each; so it was almost a match duel between the two leaders. There are some funny things going off in the deep hole, but it made a big change this weekend. During the week Jack OsBorne, who has been having engine problems, was out there with Len Verity on the Linda Ruth

and they raised four white marlin, but the only one landed was one by Ruth Verity. This was on Thursday; and on Friday Len and Ruth were out there again, and raised 10 whites, and didn't land one. NOW. THAT’S unusual because canyon anglers like this seldom miss that many fish, but so far this year that’s been the canyon story; Lots of fish in the baits, but not many landed. It all changed this weekend though, because it really got hot in Wilmington Canyon, and a lot of fish were taken. The Our Pal had two fish, and Joey Drosea was on the Hot Tuna and had two; and Jack told me he saw one boat with four flags flying. I didn’t get all the catches but I know the bill fishing got red hot. Jack Osborne and Cpt. Don Murphy got underway on Sunday on the Red Beard again and found those tuna on the 30 fathom line, and came home with four nice ones — three 60 pounders and one 100 lb* fish for Cpt. Don on 30 pound test. They had quite a day; and from all reports a lot of fish were taken on the 30 along with quite a few bUl fish in the canyon. NOW, LETS GO a litUe more inshore. Stew Millard of the Villas was out bluefish chumming on Cpt. Jim Cicchitti’s Starlight and got twelve 10- to IS-lb. bluefish, and had a ball (but he said it’s awfully hard to get up the next morning at 5:30 when you get into the dock at 3 a.m.). Greg Willi* and Tom Repici of Coqi;t House had their wives Joanne and Joan out bluefishing Friday, and hit those big blues at ZFB. They got 55 slammers. Inshore flounder fishing is coming into its own. I saw Jim Magill in the 7-11 in the Villas on Friday, and he told me he got 45 flounders Thursday. I imagine he was in the Bay. I because east of 19 Buoy came into it’s own over the weekend. Bob Hertxog, Richie Rayson, his grandson, and I went out there Sunday on the advice of Cpt. Bob Shumann of the Sea Star Cpt. Bob had a nice catch for his party that

day.

WE STARTED on the lower end of the "punk grounds," and Richie caught the first flattie, a nice 2 pounder, and then Bob and I hooked up on one each. We all took turns catching flatties, and working up towards the fleet, which was inside 19 Buoy when I hooked and Bob netted a 9 lb. weakfish, which was really a beauty. The fellow on the boat next to us had one the same size at the same time, and then the fishing dropped off The day before there were quite a few weakfish taken, reportedly, and by the size of the fleet east of 19, something must have taken place. Cpt. Mark Elliott was anchored on a spot with his party, and picked up some weakies, but then made a move towards Brandywine for flounder 1 believe the Bay is going to get red hot in August with weakies and flounder CP l NTH. Friday they had good flounder fishing in the Ocean too from

Diamond Beach to the Rips. Cpt. Charlie Selby reports good flounder fishing there ojp the Rainbow and says if you can find clear water in the spot where your boat can' drift at a fair speed, you ought to be able to catch them. Cpt. Bill Henfey agrees, but says his best catches have been in the Rips with the Sea Raider. Night Cpt. Bob Mullen reported blue fishing had picked up after a short lull, and on Friday night the Harrowgate String Band, headed by Ron Radcliffe had an excellent night on the Sea Raider. They boated over 300 slammers, and the winner was Rick ' Brown of Warminster, with a 17 lb. blue. His brother Tony was high hook with 27

big blues.

Really, I can’t say Ashing has been all that bad. Spotty yes, but that’s changing rapidly as August starts with a bang. All this month should show an improvement — and then there’s the golden days of September beckoning. So the best is yet to come. 1 HAD AN enjoyable lunch Thursday! Joe llalbruner of Shunpike had his brother "Bucky" and I down to his house, and fed us on his last piece of drum, which he fried. He also fried some squash for us, and sliced three Jersey tomatos for a side dish. While we were eating we got taHcing about Hatteras, and their experiences on our last two trips. "Joe, keep Boyd talking about Hatteras, or I’m not going to get any of that drum,” Bucky said. It sure was good, and I’m really sorry the drum is gone. I’ve got to check with J. Franklin Menz. and see if he’s got any frozen. I WAS HAVING a cup of coffee with he and Vic

x;

Polise. and we were admiring the 93 lb. drum Hi Thompson caught when this story popped up. Vic is making Frank a tombstone to put by his chair in the restaurant with these worils inscribed; How long do I have to wait? Frank says that's the oue thing he hears every night down at

his restaurant, where they’re featuring mako shark on the menu. Another fellow came by and heard this, and said he was going to have a tombstonc made that read; Lord, You know I really tried! I guess that says it all.
