DON’T FORGET about the two shows under and around the big tent at 80th St. and the beach on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 7 and 8. Mrs. Joseph Beta is in charge of the Art Show on Saturday and has rounded up well over a thousand paintings by both professional and amateur artists. Because of her
taste and expertise, ihis should be a feast for the eyes. Mrs. Ernie Blair has been working equally hard to select the finest in the large field of crafts. This country has had a renaisance of interest in handcrafted articles and every variety will be on display at the show on Sunday.
A FRIEND of ours came down to visit from Beach Haven last week. She deplored the density of population and loved the landscaped islands, was furious when hit by a frisbee on the beach and affronted'by people using belly-boards .n swimming areas. Most of all she was dismayed that Avalon and Stone Harbor haven’t passed ordinances restricting bicyclists to certain areas designated by white lines as have Beach Haven, the Big Apple and other crowded places.
OofU Word CHANGE OF Tyler, right, to Wagner. No Motive In Beating Death COLD SPRING - John Attenborough, the 58 year-old North Cape May man found dead off a dirt road in the Tranquility Park development site July 27. died of trauma as a result of blow(s) to the head, authorities say an autopsy last Wednesday showed. The postmorten also revealed six broken ribs. A spokesperson for the county Prosecutor's Office said the victim could have died from being kicked, punched or struck by a board or other object. No motive had been determined, but robbery was ruled out because the victim's rings, watch and money were intact and the keys to his late model Ford Escort were on the floor of the car where he was accustomed to leaving them. A CONSTRUCTION worker discovered Attenborough's body near his car, which was on an access road about 100 yards from Rt. 109. The site was combed for clues, and more than a half-dozen investigators from the Lower Twp. Police Dept., Prosecutor s Office, and State Police are investigating the homicide. The victim was employed as a cook at the Atlantic City Country Club and had formerly been a cook at the Wildwood Country Club, authorities said.
Big Riff; Little Agreement
I From Page 1) primaries because these elections are supposed io be open and unbiased. Mr. Matalucci also asserted that Title 19 should be changed because it is "contradictory.” He said that when he ran for freeholder in 1968 he sued the state over the endorsement question and won. "The governor then allowed committeepeople to endorse for two years," the leader added, noUng that after that Ume, the system reverted to the policy of no endorsement. THE TWO prominent GOP officials have been lambasting each other- for several weeks after the sheriff was first reported in the Herald to have charged the GC)P leadership with being "out of step” with the "grassroots organization." He also contended that important party decisions are made in the backroom, and that leader Matalucci is a boss whose only loyalty is to patronage, deals and promises. ■‘I’m scheduled for political demolition,” Fox said last week, saying the leader attacked him because he has dared to disagree with him on numerous issues. MR. MATALUCCI. however, contends he’s not a "boss.” "My friends call me a leader, my enemies a boss,” he said adding that Fox is an "opportunist" who wants to hold any office that’s available. “He wants to be Assemblyman, Congressman, Senator and probably even President,” Matalucci said. According to the GOP leader, the sheriff is angry because the organization didn't support him last year for Assembly or go
along with his candidate choice (Jeffrey Bell) in this year’s U.S. Senate primary. The organization endorsed Miltfcent Fenwick, who lost to Bell in Cape JV!ay ' county but won the nomination statewide. ASKED LAST Wednesday if he would meet in a debate one-on-one with the sheriff, Mr. Matalucci said he wouldn’t at this time because Fox was only looking for publicity. The leader, addled he is planning to call a meeting of 1 the Republican organizatiorifto the near future to discuss what should hi done about the sheriff and his recent attacks on the organization. Mr. Matalucci made no comment concerning a suggestion by the sheriff that

Watt Suit Set TRENTON — The state lawsuit filed in Federal District Court here last week to halt plans by U.S. Interior Secretary t James Watt from leasing 23 tracts off the Jersey coast for possible offshore oil and natural gas exploration was scheduled for court hearing yesterday. The suit filed by Gov. Thomas Kean contends that the sites — located 100 or more miles offshore from Atlantic City to Cape May — are located in prime commercial and recreational fishing spots and would be permanently damaged by drilling. All are among 155 tracts nationwide scheduled to be auctioned off tomorrow, Aug. 5, to oil 1 companies for oil and natural gas exploration.
selection of candidates for endorsement be made by a broader base of county Repbulicans than just elected committeepeople. The sheriff’s recommendation included having the decisionmaking body include elected officials as well as representatives from the various local GOP clubs. Votes would be cast by secret ballot at a Candidate’s night. CURRENTLY candidates for endorsement are selected by elected Committeemembers thru their leaders — ballots being cast by the leaders after they have had time to go back to their committeemen and women and supposedly solicit their opinions. Although he primarily called his July 27 press conference to reiterate his position that Mr. Metalucci is a boss, the sheriff also called on all voters to "see the merit of registering to vote in primary elections." IN ADDITION, the sheriff affirmed he has no quarrel with the majority of organization members, but added when he criticized the system there was "no choice but to imply critictam with certain individual members of the organization who contribute to Boss Matalucci’s ability to control by their own sins of omission or participation and approval." "The system is bad. I’m saying the system is built so as to perpetuate a boss,” he went on, charging that the "system is just as wrong now as it was 30 or 40 years ago” According to the sheriff, "Maybe I’m just rebellious against the system," he added.
