Wawa Controversy Heats Up
by JacobSchaad Jr. CAPE MAY - The heated controversy over a proposal to build a Wawa food market on Pittsburgh Avenue boiled over to the City Council meeting Monday night as a lawyer had strong words for the governing body and another resident took issue with the attorney. Focus of the comments was introduction of a zoning ordinance which would change property on a section of Pittsburgh Ave. from commercial to residential. The area is residential. LOCAL ATTORNEY Fred Schmidt, who represents the property
owner and the prospective buyer, assented that Council was responding in kind to what he said was some peoples hysterical reaction against the application. He questioned the "intestiitoj fortitude" of the mayor and the councilmen in not looking toward the future. Mr. Schm/dt contended there was strong opposition to the Washington Street Mall when it was proposed some years ago, but the members of that governing body went ahead anyway. He added that if they hadn't, decay and blight might have occurred in Cape May. HE URGED city officials
to go home and read Matthew 7:12 which he says is where the golden rule is found. (So whatever you wish that men would do to yOu, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.) The attorney also contended the city’s action is arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable and asked Council to give the matter "deep thought” before the ordinance comes up for final hearing Aug. 16. THE MAYOR antTHhe councilmen didn’t raapcmd to the lawyer’s comn>em)l, but Ann Hong did. Sheis a resident of Village Greene, the housing development near the proposed Wawa site. "You're just as wrong as I can see," said Mrs. Hong angrily. "This is a job for you. It is a homeJor us." She said the residents of Village Greene "pay a lot of taxes here" and they have a legitimate, logical reason for their opposition. SCHMIDT represents PRB Enterprises, which wants to build the store, and Cape May Greene, which wants to sell the property to PRB. The local Planning Board has granted subdivision for the property, but denied a site plan. Schmidt revealed that an action to reverse the denial was filed in Superior Court on Monday and that a new application for a site plan, which he says will meet the planning board’s requirements, will be filed on Sept. 2. If the new ordinance is passed, however, the property will become residential and will block the store. Last week, Joseph Anderson presented to Council a petition with the signatures of 355 residents who asked the city to rezone the two lots to residential. The new zoning ordinance was introduced a week later.

Low back pain is a common complaint. In fact, studies show that 8 of every 10 people will at some time suffer from this problem. This should cause no surprise if we consider that threefourths of all bending or stooping occurs in the back and that most low back pain is caused by misalignment of spinal T ienta. ouble often starts with an occasional "catch" or a "tight" feeling in the pelvic area or the legs.
