A Crabby Tradition Scuttles On
OCEAN CITY - What started out as a playful publicist’s ploy has evolved into an exciting city tradition, according to that publicist. The City’s annual Miss Crustacean Pageant, a beauty contest for hermit crabs, and the rollicking crab races were implemented by Public Relations Director Mark Soifer and his coherts seven years ago. "AT FIRST THE world snickered,” says Soifer. “Then it gasped; finally it just shrugged its shoulders and accepted the inevitable." The two contests will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the 12th St. Beach. The beauty pageant
is scheduled first with comely crustaceans from throughout Crabdom competing for the coveted "Cucumber Rind Cup", a loving cup with a cucumber stuck in it. The winner rumbles down a flower-bedecked runway and is serenaded with the Pageant’jftheme song, "Here It Conies. Miss Crustacean." There is no way to determine the sex of a hermit crab out of its natural environment so Miss Crustacean may actually be a he. “It doesn’t matter," says Soifer. "Who cares? It’s the tradition that counts!" FOLLOWING THE Miss Crustacean Pageant, the gut-wrenching Hermit Crab Races fire held. Over
150 of the fastest klutzes in Crabdom normally collide in this competition, which is marked by 15 heats and a championship run-off. Many crabs with colorful names are entered in the classic, a modest sampling follows: “Mozzarella," “Harvey Wallbanger,” “Charlie Hustle,’’ “Theotis," “Taberita,” and "Joe." No matter what the name, all crabs have their beady little peppers focused on the world’s record, 10.8 seconds, established in 1982 by Hermie, an obscure, unranked crab from Atlantic City. The Hermit Crab contests are preceded by the city’s second annual- Sand Sculpting Contest held starting 9 a m. at the 10th St. Beach.
