Of Stone Harbor The Stone Harbor Heronry is by far the largest heronry in Ncfrjersey and the only municipally owned heronry outside of Japan. On this remna£of the woods that once covered the barrier beach islands nest eight species of heron and one species of ibis. This guide will help you to identify these species. Three other species.of heron are found in this area ; the Great Blue Heron, common on the marshes in the fall, winter and spring; the American Bittern, an uncommon species, most often seen during the fall and spring migrations, and the Least Bittern, a shy bird of fresh water marshes. This is a very brief guide to these birds. Much more can be learned by watching the birds closely. Careful observation w||l reveal many subtle points of color and form. Each species has a characteristic method of hunting, and hours spent watching them feed on the marshes will not be wasted. Herons, especially the Snowy and Great Egrets, were once slaughtered for their breeding plumes. These feathers appear during breeding season and are used in mating and nest relief (when the birds take turns incubating) displays. They were used by the fashion industry as hat ornaments until efforts by the Audubon Societies, the American Ornithologist Union, and others, in the early decades of this century, succeeded in protecting the few remaining heronries and in changing public opinion, laws and fashions. The birds have largely recovered their former range since that time, and are now threatened primarily by loss of suitable nesting habitat.
