"If the results of the tests we perform next year are of comparable quality, we will open additional areas to shellfish harvesting," Vernam added, fk THE OLD PLANTS in Ocean City wotb not meeting federally mandated levels of treatment and were causing pollution of the back bays and condehination of shellfish beds, according to Norkis. S. Jersey Moth Toll A Record ,

TRENTON - A record 260, f45 acres were defoliated by gypsy moth caterpillars this year in,the southern counties of Cape * May, Cumberland, Atlan1 tic, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, and Ocean, according to an aerial survey conducted by the State Dept, of Agriculture. The total of 675,98.') acres affected this year marked the state's second highest defoliation on record, said Secretary of Agriculture Arthur R. Brown Jr. However, gypsy moth populations decreased substantially in the central and northeastern regions, so the state recorded its first statewide decline in four years. ATLANTIC. WITH 38,430 acres, Cape May, with 36,465, and Cumberland, with 62,230, accounted for 137,125 acres, though this was literally outstripped by the defoliation of 144,385 acres in rural, wooded

Sussex

More than 89,000 acres in 92 communities were treated with either carbaryl (Sevin), chemical insecticide, or Bacillus Thuringiensis, a bacterial control agent, under the supervision of the agriculture department. The State Department of Environmental Protection treated portions of state lands and recreation areas. THE STATE voluntary spary program, aimed at

reducing tree mortality from successive defoliations, provided participating Communities with guidance from state experts and a 25 percent US. Department of Agriculture, reimbursement of their treatment

costs.

The program, which recognizes that gypsy moths cannot be eradicated, offers municipalities a service on a priority basis. Treatment assistance this year was provided to municipalities with designated "priority one" acreage — areas with at least 10 homes per 50. acres that had been defoliated at least once and were in danger of losing valuable trees. THE DEPARTMENT again plans to issue notices this September to all municipalities defoliated this season offering each a free gypsy moth egg mass survey this winter to determine infestation and projected defoliation. John Kegg. chief entomologist with the agriculture department, said the collapse of some gypsy moth populations this year has shifted devastation levels from severe to moderate and lighter damage. Although defoliation remains high, he noted that decreases this year indicate a continuing collapse of gypsy moth populations statewide.
