The dog days of August are waning and the Golden days of late August-early September are beckoning. I can't say I'm sorry to see the hot, humid stuff go away. The last couple of mornings have been cool, and the evenings are getting downright pleasant again. Now on to the fishing scene. We’ve had some unusual Catches in the ocean, and some of the Bay spots are starting to come to life again. On Wednesday, Joann Murphy called me to tell me that Jim .Wallace has a 775 lb. blue marlin hanging on his scales. It was taken by Tony Copa on the Lady Janet, and there was a lot of excitement over this mightly fish, but I heard later it was harpooned, and not taken on rod and reel. IN CLOSER, in the Ocean, Jerry Jerabek informed me that Capt. Tom Roberts on the My Gat came in with 60 nice flounder. He was fishing with a group of five men near Somers shoal. Then, according to a report I got from Capt. Bill Henfey on the Sea Raider, he's had some real good flounder fishing in the vicinity of Overfall shoals, and he even had some nice weakfish fn amongst the flatties. Some pool winners were Walt Bussom, Roxborough, Pa.. 7-1/2 lb. weakfish, John Carrese, Brooklyn, 3-1/4 lb. flounder, Chrjs O'Neill, Phila., 2-1/2 lb. flounder, Bob DeCarlo, Wildwood Crest, 2 lb flounder. Mark Spit*. 3 lb. flounder, and l.vnford Horst, Lancaster. Pa. 3-3/4 lb. flounder. Night Capt. Rob Mullen, on the Sea Raider says that the big blues are biting late at night, and the parties are filling their fish bags. Pool winner in the middle of the week was Frank Price of Pittsburgh, who had a 14-3/4 lb. blue, and was high hook with 18 slammers. NOW BEFORE I leave the Ocean scene I want to salute an “old timer”—Capt. Bill Lewis on the Salty Pepper. Capt.

775 LBS Blur Marlin, barpooned by Tony Coppa on the Ladv Janet. Bill caught three white marlin this week—one each day he was out there—and the third one was the 1.112th bill fish he’s taken, which includes white marlin, blue marlin, and swordfish. That's quite a lifetime record, and there aren’t many skippers around today that can

match it!

Capt. Bill goes back to the days of Capt. Ike Swain, Capt. "Doc” Lummis, and many other legendary captains who pioneered the canyons, and he's got good reason to be •roud of his record. This t winter after fishing is ov^u-.^ie plans to guide parties! for woodcock, ducks. other water fowl. That’s the way to stay young Bill." A tip of the Old Angler’s hat to you. JOHN FISHER, of North Cape May came in Thursday. telling me that the Cape May Co.-Hatteras Anglers will hold their annual sUH-fishing- toumameht on the beach at Avalon on Sept. 11, and a look at my fishing calendar reminds me that down at South Jersey Marina the S50.000 Marlin Mardi Gras will be Aug. 26, 27, 28 & 29 This was the event last year that Capt. Joey Drosea came in with two blue marlin on the Miss Penfield, and really touched off a flurry of canyon fishing. I look for canyon fishing to steadily improve from now until the middle of September when Capt. Dick Weber will put on the Tournament of Champions

Sept. 11-16.

NOW ON TO other angling news: Blue ftth action offshore was spotty during the day. The only report I had came from Greg Willi* of Court House, who had one slammer that went 14 lb 6 ozs. He had Dr. John Napoleon out with him, and Dr. John caught nine slammers himself, but .Grey said they had to go way past the "monster buoy" to

find them.

Over in the Bay, some weakfish action was showing. Capt. Mark Elliott was telling me he had 42 founders and weaks on Saturday, and on Sunday his catch for his party was 80 fish—28 flounder and 52 weakfish. We meet at Mr. Donut mornings for coffee, and Mark fills me in He said he was in the lower punk grounds anchored.

NOW HERE^mething in the/Apology Dept. I misspelled Eddie Monaghan's name in telling the tale of him losing that bigeye tuna with Jack Osborne, and Capt. Joey Drosea on the Lobster House. His father Jim Monaghan corrected me—I spelled it Monihan. Sorry

Eddie!

One last note— One of our oldest striper fishermen, John Carda mone of Wildwood Crest, passed away last week, and those of us who fished the rocks off the north end of the Cold Spring jetty will miss him. John spent many hours out fhere in his skiff casting back to the white water on the end of the jetty. He had a tiller on the stern of his skiff which kept him off the rocks. He was a pioneer at this type of fishing, and probably had more stripers to his credit than any other Jersey Cape •fisherman. Many of. our older fishermen will remember John.

THAT'S ALL th* fishing news I've got this week, but I’ve got to tell you about a big party I attended on Wednesday night. It was Franklin Menz’s 75th birthday, and his family arranged to have the Wildwood String Band out in the parking lot at 10 o’clock to surprise him along with an ice cream truck, and a lot of his favorite children. There were also scores of well wishers, and among them was "HI” Thompson and Vic Polise. His daughter penned this poem:

BOB RAKER of CollIngdale, Pa. with one of the flounder he caught on the Rainbow, with Cpt. Charlie Selby.

Champions Fourth Time AVALON - The borough tennis season began in June with the Women’s Singles tournament and through July featured the Men’s Singles, Junior Coed Tournament and Grand Masters. In August the doubles matches began. The Women's Doubles finals were played Aug. 1. Fourth time winners Sally Williams and Tess Campbell defeated Barbara McKay and Pris Ebert 6-3 and 6-2 to take the championship. Still to come are the Men’s Doubles and the mixed doubles playoffs. The Avalon Recreation Department presents each of the winners with engraved silver platep.
