Marathon Row Thursday

North Wildwood will again sponsor the most grueling and arduous of lifeguard rowing races, a 18-mile marathon around the Wildwood island, beginning 7:30 a.m. Aug. 19 at 15th and the beach. As in the past, lifeguard crews from along the coast from New York to Florida have been invited and will compete for the $1,000 first prize — battling seas, inlet

currents, hungry green flies, and the blistering summer sun in their guest for first place. Crews, consisting of two men in a 400 lb. v boat, have trained throughout the year — swimming, running, weightlifting, and rowing — and intense elimination duels are sponsored within each beach patrol so that only superior entrants compete.
