GOP'Wants To Dump Candidate-
(FjjpmPageD paign coordinators — including Mayor Tom Clydesdale, attorney Eric Gaver, Leo Jordan, attorney Lou Dwyer, Ed Admas, Phyliss Genovese and attorney John Callinan — Hevener’s co-campaign managers Clydesdale and Gaver announced they were resigning their campaign positions. "He (Hevener) wants to run his qwn campaign and says he has backing. We thought we’d just bow out,” the mayor said. "If he thinks he’s going to ran on his own (and win] he’s going to have a surprise." According to informed sources, committee members have already voted to endorse local organization treasurer Phyllis Genevese for township committee' should Hevener decide to honor the request and withdraw from the race. UNDER STATE election laws, if a candidate withdraws within 40 days or more of the election, the party organization has the opportunity to name another candidate to run under the party label. If a candidate refuses to withdraw, there’s nothing the organization or anyone else can do to force him off the ballot. According to some close to the election, the rift between Hevener and the party
leaders centers around who should be appointed township solicitor next year if the GOP maintains control of the threemember governing body. Catarcio has allegedly been pushing for Wildwood attorney Lou Dwyer, who last year supported the candidacy of Independent Republican James Walker for Township Committee instead of organization candidate Tom Clydesdale. Hevener, insiders say, wants Wildwood attorney Louis Homstine. ANOTHER POSSIBLE cause for the split, according to informed sources, is the unwillingness of party leaders to accept Hpmstine as part of the campaign team. Allegedly. Hevener has been acting on advice from Homstine rather than from "approved" campaign leadership. Other insiders attribute the rift to nothing more than the organization not knowing how to handle a candidate who wants to be his own man and won't agree to go along with everything the organization requests. As one source, close to Hevener's campaign put it, the candidate doesn’t really care if he’s elected or not. His goal is to defeat the few leaders who hold absolute control over the party — even if it means having a Democrat elected to the governing body.
