FeatheA are constantly abraded — they arnvhipped through the air, dragged through water, scraped against mud, Alnd and vegetation — so they must be periodically replaced. Most of our birds molt, replace their feathers, at least once a year. The most common time for the molt is now, in the late summer and early fall, after the breeding season. Laughing gulls provide a good current example of birds in molt. If you watch carefully you will see some of these birds with symmetrical gaps in the flight feathers of their wings. These gaps are in the places where old feathers have dropped out and new feathers are growing in. Gaps due to molt are usually symmetrical; gaps due to accidents are not. Look in places where these gulls gather, and you may find some of them shed year-old feathers with abraded tips. These are now being replaced by new feathers with fresh, smooth tips that will support the bird through another year’s flying.
