Jersey Gape HISTORICALLY.

By. J. Pearson Cunningham

Although Head of the River Methodist Episcopal Church is not now in Cape May County, because of past changes in county boundaries, it is still part of the county’s history. Its cemetery holds the remains of many county residents, and soldiers from every war. During the Revolution, Jersey bog iron was an important product, and iron furnaces nearby made Head of the River a bustling community. Nearby •Dickahoe was an acUve port and shipbuilding center. Around 1780, a mission was started, and the church was built in 1792. It served the community for many years, but as the popidation of the settlement dwindled after the railroad lines were built through -ruckahoe, the congregation became too small for the church to continue It is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The church, surrounded by its field of white and gray tombstones, stands peacefully on Rt. 49.
