Bridge-o-rama AVALON — A bridge-o-rama is being planned by the Stone Harbor-Avalon Auxiliary for the benefit of the Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, beginning in October and continuing until May. It will be open to all members of the branch, their friends and boy friends. The same pair of partners will play together throughout the tournament. Registrations are being taken until Sept. 15 by Mrs. John Warren, 967-7264 and Mrs. Ray Francis, 967-3654.

Beach Job Begins OCEAN CITY — The long awaited beach replenishment project that will widen beaches between Morningside Rd. and 21st St. is finally underway. American Dredging Co. last Wednesday began a sand-pumping operation that reports indicate will take about 60 days. The $4.9 million project is the first beach nourishment effort being taken under the state s Shorefront Master Plan. State funds are covering 75 per cent of the project while the municipality is picking up the other 25 per cent. Funding is available under the 1977 Beaches and Harbors bond issue. Truck Driver Killed SOMERS POINT — The driver of an empty sludge truck travelingloward Ocean City was killed here last Thursday when his tracter-trailer crashed through a concrete guard rail of the Ship’s ChaiK nel Bridge and landed in the Great Ebb Harbor Bay. According to reports, Lewes Fish. 50, of Hilltown, Pa., drowned before he could be removed from the cab that lodged face down in the mud. Local police Sgt. Larry Ceres said Sunday that the cause of the accident still hasn't been determined, adding that a State Police Motor Vehicle Inspector is assisting in the Investigation. Cable TV Closer UPPER TOWNSHIP - Cable television service here and in Dennis Twp., Woodbine and Corbin City should be available to residents by the end of next summer. At least that’s the word from Township Committeeman Daniel Beyel who reportedly said last week that service in Upper may even be available as early as January. According to reports, 65 per cent of the cable and a 200 foot receiving tower are already in place here. Work on the system — which stopped indefinitely last winter while Teleprompter Cable (now owned by Westinghouse Broadcast System) looked for a new owner — is expected to resume next month after Group W finalizes its recent sale of the system to Cablentertainment Management and Services Inc., of New York. Because of Federal Communications Commission regulations restricting a broadcasting company to own and operate a cable TV system within its own marketing area, a new owner for the Teleprompter system had to be found when the cable company merged with Westinghouse.

According to reports, an undercover investigation targeted at six stores ended with salesmen and managers of Gem x Dept. Store and "This and That" being charged with failure to post prices, deceptive business practices and theft by deception. Another store. "Sun and Fun", was charged just with failure to post prices. During the same undercover operation. Gen Dept. Store salesman Pinas Zafarny was charged with criminal sexual contact. lewdness and assault Zafarny reportedly committed the sexual offenses while selling a bathing suit to an undercover female officer. According to accounts of the incident. Police Chief Harry Breslin said the sexual contact and assault charges stem from the salesman being too free with his hands, while the lewdness charge came about from words he allegedly repeated at the time of the incident.

Cop In Trouble?

MIDDLE TWP. — An off-duty police captain here may face departmental charges for patronizing an alleged Wildwood speakeasy earlier this month. According to reports, Capt. Raymond Sounder was in Swifty’s Seafood — one of two alleged Wildwood speakeasies — when State Police and Alcohol Beverage Control Commission officers raided the building Aug. 14. Although names were talwn, police reports indicate no charges were filed against patrons at the time of the raid. Committeeman Michael Voll, the township public safety director, and Police Chief Edward Hansen are looking into the incident, and will determine if action should be taken against Saunders after the State Police completes its investigation into the raid
