Tug of War (Columbia) is the most consistent album Paul McCartney has made since his classic Band On The Run The melodies are strong, his voice perfect, and the arangements contemporary. At his best, McCartney is one of the finest pop writers around, hut, at his worst, his material is overly maudlin, lacking punch and drive. Fortunately, McCartney, for the most part, avoids his weaknesses on this platter and the end result is an enjoyable record. SPLIT ENZ have been steadily building a Stateside following and this new record Time And Tide (A&M) is getting a lot of airplay. The group is rather dramatic in performance, giving a theatrical sound to their music. But, overall, this is a group that’s showing major improvements in the songwriting department. Split Enz are now writjn_ tunes with depth /and passion and this reco

their finest, thus far. A solid rock hand that’s only going to get better. X’S third album, Under The Big Black Sun (Elektra) is yet another fine record for this Los Angeles’ band. While their music freely borrows from such influences as rockabilly, sixties rock, and The Doors (former Door Ray Manzarek has produced all three of their albums) the group, thanks * to the raw, emotional vocals of Joe Doe and Exene Cervenka, still sounds unique and modern. X are making inroads without compromising, and that’s what makes them a great band.
