TRENTON - Fishing in the offshore canyons for big-game species has gotten off to a very slow start so far this year. The Marine Fisheries Administration of the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, said cold offshore waters were to blame for the late arrival of migrating tuna and marlin. THERE WAS. the division said, a brief flurry of activity in tuna fishing during mid-July, but fishing has slowed down again. The preliminary results of a survey' being conducted by Marine Fisheries indicates that only about 3,800 big game fish wre taken in the canyons between June and July 25 During the same period last yecr, anglers caught about 8,300 big game fish. This represents an overall decline in catch of 54 percent for this season. The only species showing improved catches over last year was the bigeye tuna. Following are the preliminary catch estimates for this year as compared to 1981: Speclei (Ml imj yrllow/in tuna MM 1.717 higeyr tuna 107 Jih alharnrr tuna I MS I.SiS nihllr marlin , JJJ blue marlin 9 ft iwnrd/lih 9 0 iharhi in • 77

During the pd^t six years oif\o, there has been a largcjAxpanslon^h offshore fishing that has gone undocumented. More than bver before, different uses are being made of offshore waters, including petroleum extraction, foreign fishing, and the disposal of toxic chemicals and other wastes. THE INFORMATION collected by this survey is already being used to document the extent of the offshore fishery and to uphold the best interests of recreational fishermen.
