I’m not going to start off this column telling you that fishing has been out of this world this week, because from what I hear it hasn't been all that good I did hear some fair reports on different kinds of fishing, but I also have to be honest with you. and admit I haven’t been doing a lot of fishing lately, because of my new job, and I’ve had to rely on reports and stories from my fishing buddies A GOOD STORY last week was the 935 pound

blue marlin that Frank J^nuse, of Rahway, caught on the "Ditch Digger" up inn Hudson Canyon. Jim Wallace had heard about it, and told me, but he wasn't sure whether it was 937 or 935 lbs. I asked Jack Osborne about it, because 1

knew he’d been out there on the "Red Beard" that day. Jack said he'd heard those fellows, talking, but at the same time someone said he’d caught a 300 pound wahoo on the 40 fathom line. This some wahoo shrunk to 175 pounds when they got to the lightship, and when they weighed it at the dock it went 75 pounds, so Jack wasn't too sure about the weight either: so after talking it over with John Andrus, our edilor, I decided to ignore it; and now it turns out that the whole story was true. , and that big blue seems destined to bo a new State record. ANYWAY. IT PROVES one thing, there's still some big blue marlin out there, and I believe we'll set* • more of these trophy fish in September. I can’t realy comment on the night bluefinh ehumrhing in the ocean, either; except for the story Capt. Otto Stockter told me He said that on Wednesday night Capt. John Royales. on the "Royal Flush" had 400 slammer blues with 27 men fishing. I also got a story from Andy Barber, of the "Whaler’s Cove” in North Cape May—he called and told me that Bob Wallace was out on George Conover’s boat the "Naughty Gal” along with Mark Buganski, and "Bernie" Buganski, and that they caught 40 weakfish in the "punk grounds" in the Bay. LAST SUNDAY "Jerry" Jerabek, Joe Halbruner, Lou Jacobs. Dr. G.B. Martinez and I tried to find a good spot in the "punk grounds" after we’d tried Bug Light, and an inshore spot one of Joe's fishing buddies had tipped us on; and all we got was one ♦veakfish, and one flounder. I know there’s been some nice weakfish caught in the Bay, but it’s been mostly from boats anchored, and Tellows who knew where to fish. Capt. Tom Roberts, on the "My Gal" sent word to me via Jerry to try Me- * Cries shoal for flounder, because he got 40 nice ones there on Thursday, and maybe I'll get a chance to try that this weekend, but I've got to state that from all I hear, the fishing is spotty. PEOPLE ASK me if I think it's going to improve. Sure I do! But I dbn’t go fishing just to catch fish. When I can get a day on the water with some good fishing buddies I count my blessings. I stopped a long while ago trying to catch every fish in the ocean or the bay. I like what my friend Bob Hertzog always says. "I hope I live long enough to do it again-and that goes for a full fish box or one flounder. Tom McNally. Bass and Pike editor for "Fishing World” magazine, said it all in his article entitled "Whatever happened to fishing for fun"? (I wish I’d written

that)

HE ASKS some pointed questions like: "Do the big time money tour naments—with all the supposed prestige, glory money, awards—represent the genuine basics of angl ing, which is the sole at - traction of the sport for most fishermen?'' Also- Does the simple fact that it's impossible

these days to make money by cafching big fish encourage some fishermen to lie and cheat'’ ♦ "Do the fishing tournamchLs (most comparatively new to the angling scene) turn fishing into ego trips rather than wholesome, enjoyable, outdoor recreation?” And Further-"Should fishing be a soridQsly competitive sport?" Then he adds "There’s no doubt fishing isn’t what it used to lie. A great deal of what goes on. to the minds of millions of the nation’s anglers, is a disgracq to the true sport of angling!" HE QUOTES George P a z i k , Milwaukee magazine edilor: "I think fishing tournaments, some of them, are going too far I think there are too many. I am opposed to the fash buck operators trying to line their pockets by sponsoring the killing of fish for money. As an angler. I love my sport and'I hate to see-it getting messed up by pea pie whose only interest is to make a fast buck." IF YOU can get a copy of "Fishing World” for August 1982. read this arti cle which starts on page 7, and take an honest inventory of what you get out of fishing, Some of these men are talking about the rash 'of freshwater bass .money tournaments, but it's hap pening in the salt water world too. Maybe Presidnet Regan can . devise a special sport Of tax, on calcuttis and tournaments run for money in
