A (OI PI.F, of weeks ago we printed an item which evoked more respon^than anything we have ever written We are not alone in deploring the lack of responsibility displayed by' ritfers of Mopfcds and bicyclists on this island Police Chief Bill Donohue ha* assured us the police and Councilman Jack Fitzpatrick are currently ad dn'ssing the situation. During this season more than frfi formal warnings have been issued to juveniles ami signed and returned by their parents One ticket was given to an adult riding' a bike on the sidewalk Donohue said, “We are considering many options at present but by next sum mer things will tie different and you may quote me " (•lad to hoar it — last week a woman was seriously injured by a bike while standing in the street in Stone Harbor, and Avalon had its first fatality when a tiartender from the Golden ' Inn was killed on a Moped when he crashed into a telephbne pole at 4 A M Aug 18, at 48lh & Dunne Dr Marguerite Klotzbucher

of 95th St. is a hard working member on almost every committee so we don't know how she gets the time but she and husband. Bill. Ruth ahd Gene Fisher and Cass and !>am Schettinger of CMCH gave a dinner party in the Klotz bucher’s garden strewn with overhead lights in the shape and hues of many flowers The music was supplied by the Seniors' Orchestra, back at full strength now that Paul . Scarlett has rejoined them Nicest part of the evening^ . was the many round tables that people visited so everyone had a chance to converse with friends they don't often see. We had dinner with Arlene and Quen tin Sternbergh whom we first met over cinnamon buns at the deLaurentises. Glamour girl of the party was Becky Bailey in a gorgeous flowered print and sporting feather

antennas.

DISCOVERED A wonderful store last week and could kick ourselves for not finding it bfcfhre Every time we needed thd services of a real jeweler in

off season we'd wait for a trip to Philly and go to one there While distributing posters last ween we went into P. J. of California at 348 96th St. We were dazzled by the display of ob viously authentic and most original jewels. We met Pat Johnston, the owner, w.ho told Us she'd been in business there for five years, 15 years before that in San Francisco. WHEN WE run into craftspeople who are just' that, dd their job expertly, promptly and exceed their estimates but don’t charge for extra work we like to recommend them to others. Jerry McCargo, Inc df CMCH is such a contractor/ Born in S,H. in 1935, he later moved to Avalon and then to CMCH. His business of excavation and grading has outstripped competition on the island for 22 years. He and son. Jerry, Jr get great satisfaction in beautifying v/nkempt property. If your pebbles are overgrown by weeds and you want more gracious surroundings for your home.’ 'call Jerry (465-7415), he’ll be there wh<jn you want him. DON’T FORGET Merchant's Day is Aug. 28th — make your selection first and be ready to pounce when the crowds arrive.

See you there.

• the way they are spaced apart with an abundance of land.’’ According to Linda Maenner of Woodbine. who has Antonio as her guest, it has been a rewarding experience for the entire family. "This is the first-time we have had an exchange student in our home, "hkit after meeting Tony, I’m sure it won’t be the last,” she said. IT WORKS BOTH WAYS," Mrs. Maenner continued. Our students also have the opportunity to visit Europe, and I understand that Antonio's family has entertained several children from the United States. The experience of having a foreign visitor in their home is nothing new to the Wuerker family, who own and operate the Wuerker Farm Market on Railroad Avenue. Since 1969, they have cared for

students from several countries including Israel and Germany. The two young men agreed the food here is excellent. The favorite choice of Antonio’s was turkey, while Pedro preferred ravioli. BOTH HOST FAMILIES have entertain ed the young men with trips to Great Adventure, Victorian Cape May and the Cowtown Rodeo, as well as weekend camping expeditions. After leaving South Jersey, the foreign visitors plan to tour several large cities before returning home. Both Antonio and Pedro intend to continue their education in college when they return to Spain this fall. But for the present they are the same as any other youngsters on vacation - too busy to study.
