The World Turns Today For Frank Francesconi
By Jacob Schaad Jr. „ CAPE MAY - Starting today, the world will be different for Frank Francesconi. Out of his life will go the headaches of speeding drivers, 'intoxicated juveniles and occasional burglaries., Enter, instead, will be a lifestyle of hours on the golf course, travel about the country and all the other amenities that go with retirement. Francesconi is leaving the Cape May police force after 29 years and three months as a man in blue, tht? last two years as chief of police His duty ended at midnight this morning “I want to do* a little traveling. My wife passed away last March. I just don’t feel right." said the silver haired native of Cape May. POLICE WORK has changed considerably since Francesconi accepted the position of
patrolman in 1953 after serving in the AiK Corps during World War H as a military policeman. "There is more paper work now than.before and to be a policeman today you-almost need a college degree." Francesconi said. "The law changes from one day to the next." The Cape May police force now has 15
policemen, four dispatcher; and 16 part-time summer policemen. Four members of the force have college degrees. When Francesconi joined the force there were 12 policemen and two parttime summer cops. The two big police problems in Cape May these days, according to the exchief. are speeding in the summer and drinking among the youth. He believes that the drinking age should be restored to 21. "When the drinking age was 21 we never had the trouble that we have today with juveniles." he said. He predicts that with the increased popularity, of Cape May there won’t be any room for cars in the slimmer in a year or two. Francesconi plans to visit a nephew in California at the end of October. He hasn’t been to the Golden State since World War II
when he left San Francisco to serve in New Guinea, the Philippines. Okinawa and Tokyo In the past he had vacationed in the winter in Florida with his Wife, the former Ruth A Crosby Before California, however, he hopes to spend at least four days a week on the golf course. He's not’a bad golfer, shooting around BO. Last July in Carney's Golf Tournament in Atlantic City hcrwis the closest competitor tV scoring a hole-in Ane, coming within 22 inches of 4he target He won a dozen golf balls If he had made the hole-in-one. he would have gone home in a Lincoln Continental. The man scheduled to take Francesconi's place is Captain Harry Slot;., fie has been appointed to that post by City Manager Fred Coldren and will hold it tentatively for a 60 day period after which an evaluation will be made for permanent appointment.
