By Jacob Schaad Jr. CAPE MAY - For some people the ultimate challenge is climbing Mount Everest, swimming the English Channel or landing on the moon \just a short distance from his place of business, a lifeguard station on the Cape May Beach. Scott Alessi's challenge — the Atlantic Ocean - has been staring at him for the past three years The more he looked at the ocean, tranquil or violent, the more he wanted to become what is believed to be the first person to swim the 17 miles around Cape Island AFTER TWO years of hard training and frustration caused by the elements, the 23-year-old Pepn State alumnus accomplished that goal in five hours and 30 minutes last August 20. "The ocean was there and I just felt I had an obligation to do it," Alessi explained with a shrug He started his challenge at 7 a m at the Cape May inlet, through the canal into the Delaware Bay and then the ocean'along the Cape May beachfront to Poverty

Beach

"When I finished I was delirious and in a semiconscious state,” said Alessi. "My coach and trainer. Al Pappas, had to help me to the ground and then they -took me to the k beach patrol 'Station to recover." Alessi swam under the rules of the professional marathon. That meant r in the course of his swim he could never touch a boat or land. When he wanted to rest-he had to tread water or float on his back. From the starting point to the area of the Cape May Ferry Alessi took-just one break. At Higbee's Beach, Alessi said, "the water was really rough with thrfee or four feet swells and the wind was blowing into my face. It was very difficult to

swim."

BY THE time he reached the concrete ship at the Sunset Beach area the swells picked up another

foot and the lifeboat was having a problem fighting f he wind. (In the lifeboat were Beach Patrol Lt. Ralph Atwell and Pappas. 4 also a lifeguard and a professor at Salisbury State. In a motorboat accompanying him-|was Buzz Mogok, superintendent of

the patrol.)

mer to try and beat his' record. It probably will be more difficult for him ne*t year. At Penn State he was a member of the swimming team and more recently the water polo team. In the corporate world much of his time will be ^pent behind a desk rather than in a swimming pool.

Conditions became more tranquil at Cape May Point the.rest of the trip. When Alessi reached Grant Street, site of the beaqh patrol headquarters, virtually the entire city lifeguard contingent rowed out and cheered him on for

the final stretch.

CAPE MAY - The two teams with the best records during the regular season have survived the playoff wars thus far and are going head to head in a five-game series for the city’s National League Softball Championship. Five-time champion Kramer Beverage finished the regular season on top after an off year in *81 and Law's Printing, a young team now coming into its own. are no strangers to - each other.

But he says he's going to try to make it. If he doesn't, it’s a pretty good bet that some other young swimmer will come along and try to beat the record*he pioneered.

THE ADVERSARIES battled through three very close contests during league play . with Laws triumphing*twice.

“When I finished / teas delirious and in a semi-conscious state.”

Alessi began training for his personal challenge on the Memorial Day weekend df 1981. Under the training of Pappas, he would arise •six days a week at 7 a m. anil swim the ocean from the Grant Street to the Philadelphia Beaches and hack. He swam for 10 weeks, only to be disappointed when Hurricane David arrived oh the day he was supposed, to meet the challertge. „He then

EVER PERSPVERA.NT. the 3-9, 150 pound lifeguard decided to try it again this year. For two weeks, starting on Memorial Day, he ran two miles a day aqd the second week of June he hit the whter. With Pappas in the rowboat, shouting en* couragement at him and showing hinj how to improve his stroke, Alessi i spent considerable time swimming against the cur-

rent.

His challenge accomplished, Alesesi now is going out in style. This is his last year as a lifeguard. Shortly he will begin training for the business world with the Marriott Hotel Corporation. However, he is thinking of coming back next sum-
