THIS WKEK marked the

start of-a change-around; from what I've seen and heard, the fall fishing season has started. There were a lot of big g/eakfish taken up the Bay •'Runty" Chew, of the Fish Hook in the Villas called and said that Bailey's up near Maurice River packed out 20 boxes of weakfish in the medium size range. These were hook and line fish, so up around Miah-Maul a lot" .o(anglers had good fishing Those fish will drop down the Bay as the weather gets cooler, and the golden days of September come into being However. Cpt. Mark Klliott on the Gone Fishln' told me he had worked hard this last weekend, and got 32 fish for his party, so

they're not here yet. ON THE OCEAN side,

though, it was a different story Out around McCric?s shoal Abe Warringer and John I,idirr of Villas came in with 42 flounder of nice size; and off the Diamond Beach Condo. Cpt. Tom Roberts on thelWy Gal had 22 flounder which Jerry Jerahek said were «\|l 14 to 21b. flatties. FishingTn Cpt. Tom’s party wereN^ill’

Braun and son Jeffrey. Jeff had four flounders to his dad's two; also aboard was Jim Andreas who got 12, and Jerry and Jim Crampton (I didn't get a count on the last two catches). Cpt. Bill llenfey| on the Sea Raider reported good large flounder action along with a lot of night blue fish catches. Then Cpt. Charles Selby on the Rainbow also reported good flattie ac lion, and Cpt. Charlie's also said there were lots of big blues chumming at nigty. and that in this last week they've also been having some monster weakfish caught in their chum

slicks.

THE BIG NEWS though, was off in the canyon, as South Jersey Marina's Marlin Mardi-Gras got under way. They had 50 boats participating, and the first day produced 18 while marlin. 2 dolphin, 2 wjtflioo, and ,50 to 70

yellowfin and bigeye tuna, and 2 bigger big eye’s. Sal Horace's Five Star Is leading in the fohite marlin category with a 68 pounder. I visited with Cpt. Sal and Cpt. Iny Horace on Saturday and they both said that white really gave them a battle. It jumped so many times that it was hard to * count, but they estimated it took 70 leaps before they got him to the boat. Cpt. "Chic" Bacon on the Dia mond II had a dolphin and a 73 pound wahoo. and Cpt. Spurge on the Teacher's Pet had a wahoo. and a 154 lb. bigeye ' tuna ’nie Satan's Lady had a 200 lb. bigeye to lead that

category.

ON THE SECOND day. which was windy and rough, the catches weren't as plentiful although Cpt. Jim Craigjack on the Our Pal hit the jackpot with a 344 lb. blue marlin. He had a real oldtime veteran billfisherman with him, Cpt. Bert Gable, 1 and they found that blue off in the dbep between Wilmington and Spencer canyon. I counted six whites on the rack, and there must

tKat big boat around with inches to spare, and never even touches a piling putting her into the dock. This tournament was a well run contest, and should have an interesting ending, y My column this week was going to cai*i7 a uiory and an acclamation about Congressman Bill Hughes accomplishments on our water scene, but I've got to put that off until next week. I will say, however, that we are a fortunate county to have a man like Bill Hughes down in Washington representing

IT WAS HARD to wpte a comprehensive column this week, because on Monday one of my real bid friends passed away lx>uls Hearon Sr. of Villa's, died while working on his lawn, and it was a Teat blow. Lou was one of the be# mechanics I've known, and he lived alongside our lumber yard for a long time. , Once in awhile we'd get out fishing together, but most of the time he was flying models of airplanes by remote control. Our paths crossed many times while I had the lumber.yard, and he was always a big help to me. He was the kind of friend who was always there when you needed him, and I'll miss him.

h^ve been two dozen tuna weighed in, so ‘'Sal'' Horace led in the white marlin category, and Jim Craigjack led in the blue marlin division I don’t believe I’ll be able to get in the final results before presstime, so I’ll have to get back to you next week

with the winners..

SOUTH JERSEY Marina was a sight to see on Saturday night as all those big canyon boats were docking, and the topper was when the new Jersey Devil came in th? harbor. She’s well over 70 ft. long, and * they had to put her in one of the big party boat slips. Cpt. Ronnie Jones wheeled
