Waterfowl Prospects Good
TRENTON - New Jersey waterfowl hunters can look forward to another good season for black ducks and Canada geese, and the prospects for snow geese and brants are about the same as last year. The Atlantic Flyway Council, at its meeting recently in Charleston. S.d. voted to recommehd that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service retain both the bag limits and season limits for all the migratdry waterfowl. THERE HAS BEEN some speculation that the council would reduce the daily bag limU, of Canada geese from four to three, and there might be a reaction in the harvest of black ducks. In New Jersey, the bag limit for ducks is base on the point system. DIRECTOR Russell A Cookingham of the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, said he was please that the council retaine the existing limits He noted that there are a preponderant of Canada geese which have made New Jefsey their permanent home, and that the black duck is New Jersey’s single most sought after waterfowl. Studies show that the black duck accounts for about 30 percent of the waterfowl bird harvest.in the state annually THE COUNCIL noted that there continues to be a reduction in the black duck population throughout the flyway. It is estimated that the numbers of these birds is down about 25 percent over the I6ng term, but in
New Jersey, thanks to habitat protection, the number of birds has remained stable and is expected to continue to provide good to excellent hunting. The Council has also recommended to continue the brartt season. Last year was the first time brant could be legally taken since 1975. There will again be a 30-day brant season with a two bird daily bag limit. ALSO RECOMMENDED w,as a four-bird daily bag limit and a 90-day session for show geese. Finally, the council also recommended a special six-day. males only, canvasback duck season with a three-bird bag limit to be held in the traditional canvasback areas. ‘For New Jersey this would mean opening the closed area in both Monmouth and Ocean counties. However, this proposal is not expected to receive final approval. Activities Resume CAPE MAY - City Recreation Summer Activities which ended Aug. 15 will resume with open programs only* Monday.
