Insurance Savings by County

COURT HOUSE - By soliciting competitive proposals for property and casualty insurance, the county has saved the taxpayers over $200,000, according to Freeholder William E. Sturm Jr, who oversees the Department of Insurance as Director of Revenue and Finance for the county. The County has just completed a three-month process that produced 23 proposals from 16 companies in the following areas; Property; Bridge Physfcal Damage; General Liability; Public Official Liability; Police Professidfial Liability and Flood Insurance. The Board of Freeholders employed the consulting firm, Insurance Buyers Council Inc., to analyze the proposals and contracts were awarded June 22. "THE COST OF the insurance coverages was approximately $573,000 in 1981,” Sturm said, "This year’s process allowed us to purchase the same or .broader coverage for a total cost of $346,961, subject to audits and

negotiated changes.” Two of the major reasons for the significant savings are the current state of the insurance market and the county’s decision to increase its level of risk retention through higher deductibles. Both of these variables had a substantial impact on the premium quotations, according to Sturm. “In 1981 our property and general liability premium was approximately $204,988 with a $100 property and a 0 general liability deductible; this year the cost is $82,876 with a $1,000 property and a $2,500 general liability deductible level t ”
