has made a lot of fellows sort of shake their heads, and wonder about that old adage: “about the only thing we know about fish is that they have heads and tails.'' Labor Day weekend was that kind, of fishing climate. Weakfish, which had bitten good all week in the Bay, were spread pretty thin by the large amount of boats fishing for them, and only the seasoned Bay fishermen, who knew where to anchor away from the crowd had any catches, and most of them used shedder crab for bait. Isabelle Hawkey went out on the “Gone Fishin’” with Captain Mark Elliott on Labor Day, and caught 16 weakfish. She said Capt. Mark anchored up in the upper punk grounds away from all the boats, and used shedder crabs. Joe Halbruner, Lou Jacobs, and I tried drifting all over

Joe and I had one of his specialities; spaghetti with crab .sauce. The sauce is a tomato sauce with hard crabs broiled in it, and it’s

delicious.

NoW to get back to fishing. That same day (Labor Day) when we arrived back at Roseman, Capt. Chris on the Fantasy was bringing a big barrel of fish for Donald Rosdman to clean. He’d gotten 22 slammer blues, 11 tiderunner weakfish, and six bonito out near 2FB for his party. Then Jerry Jerabek came in telling about a great day on Capt. Tom Roberts “My Gal” in theOcean. GETTING Ut* TO date. The Cape May County Hatteras Anglers annual Surf tournament Saturday on the Avalon Beach was a real success. Twenty surf fishing teams caught 87 fish, which included blues, king fish (about six of Them) and weakfish. First place was taken by the South Jersey Anglers, and their team Captain Ed Klingermen took top honors for the biggest fish with a 21" weakie. Second place was taken by the Ocean City Yacht Club "A" team, and third place was won by The New Jersey Beach Buggy Association. As Frank Giampi said, "this should start a lot of boat

fishermen thinking about fall surf fishing." Frank says they’ve been doing real good off Avalon on flounder. Charley Raff, Charley Cantz, and Bob Kantz stopped over early, before the tournament, and fished the 96th St. bridge at Stone Harbor, because a lot of big weakfish have been taken there recently. Wilbur Ostrander Jr. told me that Charley Glenn has been going out early in the day in back of Stone Harbor Point and is bringing back a lot of big weakfish. John Fisher, of North Cape

May, also told me during the tournament, that Jim Wallace had weighed in an 11 pound eight ounce weakfish off one of the jet ties. Frank Giampi also' said ttpt Townsends Inlet is* making a big circular bar that should be terrific for fall surf fishing. Permits now can be obtained in Avalon Sept. 15, so keep the beaches in mind, gullet will be coming out of the inlets now. and fish will follow them. On Sunday The Tournament of Champions starts .down at South Jersey Marina. This will be the grand finale of a mediocre canyon season, but all the big boats will be there, and it should be quite a contest. I’ll try to bring you an update version of it in next week’s paper ... '"V
