Fenwick Asks Expansion Of Vet Hospitals
by Rob Shiles
WILDWOOD - Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Millicent Fenwick tdld Legionnaires that instead of proposing to cli existing veterans medical facilities, the present ad ministration should be con sidering the expansion of existing facilities and services for veterans. “It makes great common sense,” she said, "to establish additional facilities for those needing medical treatment, but not necessarily permanent hospitalization, adjacent to or as closp as possible to existing veterans
hospitals." She pointed out
that the necessary equipment and professional staff would be available to treat veterans in need of special services. IN A BRIEF'ADDRESS the state American Legion Convention, the North Jersey congresswoman told Legion delegates she opposes the decision of the Veterans Administration to close Lyons Hospital—a facility, she indicated she has had the opportunity to visit often. Along with several veterans groups she worked to send a petition to the Veterans Administration stressing opposition to the closing of the hospitals

surgical unit. "Unfortunately, we were not successful in this endeaver, but I did help work out an arrangement whereby the SCAN facilities at Morristown Memorial Hospital will be available for Lyons patients needing the services of this equipment,” Fenwick said. » "I’m sorry the surgical unit didn’t go," she added, noting that when she first became acquainted with Lyons it was primarily'a psychiatric hospital. "We w*nt to work to get surgical and medical suites available there," she said, indicating the goal was to upgrade the facility 5o that veterans needing medical services, other than just psychiatric care, could be treated. The congresswoman pointed out that pften socie-' ty forgets the important role veterans have played in defending our country. "Patriotism, honor and courage are words we don't hear much today," she asserted. ‘‘Today we are all - wondering how we can best serve our country...how we can preserve the institutioris upon which our freedom is maintained.” Fenwick went on. The three institutions to which she referred are the U.S. Constitution, an independent judiciary and the free press. "THAT’S THE glory of this country,” she said. ’'•Dissent i^ not viewed as treason. Human beings have a right to speak, and ttoe press can write about it." People from around the world come to this country, the congresswoman said, because of the freedom and justice they find here. "I don’t think it’s poverty and hunger that drives people mad," she added "It’s the feeling that everything is stacked against them...that’s injustice." The congresswoman called on Legion members — as well as all Americans — to alert their legislative representatives when they observe things that appear unjust and should be changed. "We so often see things contrary to common sense.” Fenwick said. "These things continue until someone finally asks ‘why?’." She urged Legionnaires to write her when they know of things that should be corrected. "If it requires^ large appropriations, it will take ^ime," she asserted, adding,’ however, that "it’s so often caring and common sense" that motivates change. ‘‘We’re all in this together,” Fenwick concluded. "We better all stick together in a very windy world."
