by Bob Shiies WILDWOOD - Frank Lautenberg, Democratic candidate for the U.S.J Senate, told Legionnaires here Thursday that he has a "personal commitment" to the passage of the G.I Bill’ currently before Congress, and opposes the present administration's plans to close the surgical suite at Lyon's Veterans Hospital. Lautenberg, who hopes to defeat Republican Congresswoman Millicenf FenWick for the Senate seat previously held by Sen. Harrison Williams, was in twon Thursday to address the opening of the state American Legion Convention. "The G.I. Bill gave me by chance to succeed," the World War II veteran told the delegates gathered in Convehtion Hall. 4 "I believe that young Americans in .the service today deserve the same chance." Lautenberg, who serve three years with the Army Signal Corps, in England; France and Belgium, was graduated from Columbia University through aid of the G.I. Bill. After his graduation he joined Automatic Data Processing a budding data processing company -- and guided its growth from five to 16,000 employees. •TM NOT going to allow the budget (federal) to be trimmed by cutting funds for Ly<f>s,” he asserted, charginglthat the proposal lo eliminate the surgical suite atj, Lyons is just another way to save pennies at the expeiise of "our veterans' health." been promised so long? " he asked. During his brief remarks, the candviate also charged that "nuclear proliferation is not the way to go" in building a strong national defense. He stressed that defense spending priorities must be reordered, and a renewed commitment issued to strong conventional military forces. "The best investment this country can make is in its human resources," he said, adding that for the nation to be strong there has to be "service from everyone." Continuing, Lautenberg
told Legion members that while each of them are veterans, they are also "New Jerseyans." "New Jersey has been shortchanged for a lot of years," he said, noting that the state ranks 46th in the nation in the amount of funding it receives to carry out federal programs. "I say it's time New Jersey be put first for a change," the candidate said, charging that it's time the national budget deficit be closed, interest rates be brought down, and mortgage rates be stabilized. "We're facing hard times." he added.
