NEWARK - Have you ever wondered what was on the table when New Jersey's early American colonists sat down to dinner? If you have, then The New Jersey Historical Society’s new publication, Pleasures oflColonial Cooking, will satisfy, your curiosity and supply you with some of the newest old recipes to be found. The unique volume was drawn from a hand-written recipe collection passed down in New Jersey and New York through several generations of the women of New Jersey’s Ashfield family during the 1700s. The recipes range from such motahwatering dishes as cruatless spinich quiche (tansey* and lemon chickerjpvith mushrooms, to somfc rather exotic entrees like broiled pigion and hog'§ ears. THE O R-1 G I N*A I, manuscript has been part of The New Jersey Historical Society's collections since 1919. But since the recipes were designed to usp on the open hearth, they were inaccessible to the modern cook. Last

year, the open-hearth cooks of the Miller-Cory House Museum in Westfield, took on the task of updating 60 of the most appetizing recipes for today’s kitchen. In addition, the book includes almost 200 original recipes, carefully Cheese On RIO GRANDE — Many county families will have cause to smile when distribution of federal surplus cheese starts next month. Eligible for the cheese are families receiving Aid to Families with Dependent Children, food stamps, Pharmaceutical Assistance for the Aged, or supplemental security income, plus those with incomes 185 percent of federal poverty guidelines. transcribed and edited, over 70 historical illustrations, and an essay on the art of open-hearth cooking. Pleasures ■ of Colonial Cooking is available in paperback from The New ^Jersey Historical Society, 230 Broadway, Newark, 07104. Way for county pick-up. The five-pound blocks of processed American cheese will be distributed in the state under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture. The “cheese giveaway" to take six to eight weeks, will be repeated every two months, according to the announcement by Gov. Thomas Kean. Hawaiian Dance WOODBINE - The Widows or Widowers Club is having a Hawaiian dance 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25. at the Out Reach House in Pomona. Snacks and live music will be provided.
