CAPE MAY - The 37th Annual Cape May Autumn Weekend and annual meeting of the N.J. Audubon Society are scheduled Oct. 1-3. Headquarters for the weekend, hosted by NJAS’ Cape May Bird Observatory, will be the Golden Eagle Inn here. Former Governor Brendan Byrne will accept the Conservationist of the Year Award for his strong advocacy of Pine Barrens protection and preservation, which have long b6en a priority of the society. THE CAPE MAY Weekend will coincide wth the peak migration of hawks, "owls, songbirds, and monarch butterflies. Outdoor' events include pelagic .(ocean) birding trips, 'fieldtrips for birds and ifktany ranging over CapeJlMny's diverse habita* a wetlands boat trip, an owl watch, and hawk-banding and butt e-T fly-tagging demonstrations. ~ Indoor events include workshops, the state premiere of a film on ospreys, lectures, and evening presentations by ornithologist and author John Bull and by wildlife artist Richard Ellis. THE CAPE IS worldrenowned for its spectacular hawk flights and songbird concentrations, and ranks as one of the top sites for birding in the U,S. Research conducted by Cape May Bird Observatory since 1976 has established it as the "raptor (bird of prey) capital of North America." CMBO annually counts over 89,000 hawks under contract each fall with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Evening Activities Program

WILDWOOD - The Evening Activities Program, a community service of the Board of Education, will begin its fall semester in the High School Building Thursday, Sept. 30, and Monday, Oct. 4. Forty-six classes are being offered on Monday and/or Thursday nights, including many continuing favorites and six which are new this year: Ballroom Dancihg, Conversational Italian, Preparation of Payroll Tax Returns, Sing- ■ ing to Music, Silk Flowers, and Travel Tips. Slimnastics and Photography, which were popular two years ago, are again being offered this semester. THE EVENING Ac-

tivities Program is still a testing center for those wishing to take the GED Test for a high school ^ diploma. Classes to help students prepare for the GED test are offered at no charge Monday and Thursday nights. Also free are English as a Second Language classes for anyone whose native language is not English and Adult Basic Education classes for those who do not have a high school diploma and want to work on their basic skills in English and Math.
