Local Memories Of a Princess

By Charles V. Mathis CAPE MAY - When you are lucky enough to live in the county of America’s oldest seashore resort, sometimes your- friends and neighbors are international figures - and yes, even royalty. The frail Duchess of Windsor, summered at the Cape with her aunt. She had her Baltimore debutante coming-out party at the Colonial. With her first husband. Wallis Warfield, she even wintered at the Cape at the celebrated Windsor Hotel. Other notables on the guest register included Joseph Kennedy, Sr., Frank Lloyd Wright, Gloria Swanson and GRACE KELLY. It is always sad to lose a friend and neighbor, especially when it is a selfless person who spent much of her time helping others. There are area residents who actually dated the Princpss of Monaco before she achieved Hollywood stardom and royalty. THE KELLY MANSION on the Ocean City beach is worth a million dollars. Hardly a year passed without Grace returning home. As if that isn't enough, her “love match" meeting with Prince Rainier happened in nearby Margate. Monaco was on the skids until the Kelly magic-ap-peared on the scene. A favorite of Hollywood stars, *she immediately lured ifiany of them to her kingdom and added her own special aura • of glamous and ladylike manners. Yes, like everything and everyone Grace Kelly touched - soon everything was "coming up roses" in Monaco. But surprise of surprises, the storybook marriage was "for real” - the Prince and the movie star were REALLY in love! We can’t recall ever seeing so many folks shedding tears in public as they read the sad, sorrowful details of her demise. And along

with everyday folks, tears were being shed by folks Hke Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart and Celeste Holm. Then, of course, her family owned part of the Atlantic City race track where hundreds of our readers enjoyed seeing a real live Princess. Recently interviewed by Uh? abrasive Pierre Salinger on TV, she managed to keep her cool under his relentless prodding and said: "I want only to be remembered as a good human being.” She got her wish. *Tis the pity that so much vibrant life still loomed ahead of her when she died a week ago Tuesday.
