so many ways that man has had a negative impact on birds " The director, who was here attending a three-day symposium at the Wetlands Institute on "The Effects of Oil on Birds," ex plained that' while a bird may be able to overcome the cffects v of being oiled, if it has also contacted DDT or other harmful chemicals its chances of survival are significantly reduced. to feed off their body fat and if they have absorbed chemicals into the tissue it is injested." . According to Frink, the overall extent of problems caused by combination of contaminants is virtually unknown: She added, however, that discussion and exchange of ideas at the seminar have shed new light on the issue "We re learning the real scope of the problem we’re facing." she asserted. In a way it’s depressing In a way it’s interesting The symposium, spon sored by Tri-State Rescue, brought together more than 50 scientists from throughout the U.S., Canada, and Scotland. According to Frink, this is the first conference attended by both researchers and field workers involved in the care and rehabilitation of birds affected by oil .spills. There are two or three groups approaching the issue differently, she explained. There, are the workers who go into the Jield when there is a spill and apply clinical
knowledge. There are others performing research in the laboratory under totally controlled situations. "We can learn things that can help each other," the director pointed said. "We’re frying to ftgtoe out how to work toother to solve this treiKendous problem." & Don Rosie, Tri-State clinic director echoed Frink’s enthusiastic remarks about the success of the symposium. "Everybody approached the issue differently. They didn’t all ask the same questions," he said. "It was a good chance for people to exchange philosophy," Rosie noted, adding that previously there has been lack of communication between scientists approaching the issue through different methods. The Tri-State Bird Rescue, to which both Frink and Rosie have been involved for several years, was organized in Dec. 1976. Through this rescue and research organisation not only birds affected by oil

spills are handled, but also those injured by other means. Volunteers are trained through workshops and other program how to properly handle and wash oiled birds. ACCORDING-TO ROSIE, since June 6, the Tri-State clinic has handled 400 birds, consisting of some 35 to 40species. Many of Jthese are young that have been abandoned by their parents. Others have been sickened by pesticides, wounded by hunters, hit by cars, infected with botulism, or attacked by gape worms that lodge in the birds; trachea. Continuing, Rosie em-
phasized that the goal of Tri-State is to care and rehabilitate the birds so they can be released into their natural environment. "The closer you can come to imitating the situation in the wild, the better. , ' the clinic director said. Successful rehabilitation requires trained people, he added, stressing that anyorle finding a bird that appear^to need treatment shouhrimmediately take it to someone qualified to administer proper care. / You have to be federally licensed to possess and handle birds, no matter ’ how altruistic your intent,” he said.
