WE WANT MILES (Columbia) by Miles Davis Is another strong, exciting accomplishment for this jazz legend. Miles’ trumpet solos are a true work of beauty, as he uses his horn the way most people use words. His fellqw musicians are. s always, given a lot of fn /dom to express themselves and the end result is a record jazz fans wouldn’t want to miss. Miles Davis is always on the edge of something new and exciting, yet he never forsakes his roots, which is why, year after year, he can hold hirf own against the young upstarts who try to dethrone Ipm as the best jazi trumpet^ layer, today. While not as adventurous as Miles Dpvis, Dizzy Gillespie is, nevertheless, a great jazz musician. His trumpet playing as always had a humorous quality to it/ and this session, the Source (Jazz Man) won't let his followers v down. Besides a keen sense of humor, Gillespie is a master craftsman, making each note a sheer delight to hear. Because of guesting on television talk shows, Dizzy Gillespie is too often taken for granted, which is a shame, because this man has always been one of

jazz!s best spokesmen: This is a highfr enjoyable release. * Gregory Isaacs' Mr. Isaacs (Shanachie) should appeal to more than just his hardcore reggae following. Isaacs possesses a strong, rich voice that works well on the slower numbers. His music has plenty of emotion, and, coupled with the infectious reggae rhythms, it makes this record irresistable.
Beat Of The Beach (Arista) is a wild; fun cob lection of lost soul gems. This two-record set has more than its share of highlights, but the work of The Drifters, Box Tops. The Showmen, Aaron Nev.ille. and James & Bobby Purify stand out the most. The vocals, musicianship, material, and feeling are unifprmally excellent, and while not all of these were “hits,” all are classics in their own right.
