We are coming into a changing time in our angling world. This has been a season of big changes, and this one will be no exception. As the sun crossed the line on Wednesday the wind was blowing northeast, and that means only ooe thing if all the old tales I've heard are true. I'll predict from those sayings that we’ll have prevailing northeast winds all year in 1983, and that may make a difference to every fisherman. Now, on to this subject of change. We didn’t have too much of a spring, and suddenly it was summer. The sun^me^ sort of lingered on through fall, and before we know it, it will be winter. Last Wednesday I was talking to Captain "Hi” Thompson down at Frank Menz’s restaurant, and he was telling me that the "Big Jirrt
11" was finding some nice seabass offshore, and that he thought there would be some good cod fishing this next year. It seems there’s been a lot of cod taken up north, and that sort of pinpoints the possibility of a good cod season. Now I know it seems funny to be talking . about a cold water fish like cod right nou(, but that season will be here before we know it. There is / one more run we fall anglers can look forward to, and that's the fall run of whakfish and blues in our inlets. John Fisher of North Cape May has been fishing the surf at Poverty Beach and he says there have been lots of spots and mullet showing at low water. ( George Dunham also said he’s already livelining spots, and catching

big weakfish in the sounds now. As this bait moves towards the inlets we’ll start getting that real last spurt, and the party boats are already trying along the beach front. Capt Tom Roberts on the "Nfy Gal" had Jerry Jerabek, Fred Hansen, "Banjo," and himself out there on Friday off the Wildwood Condo, and came back with 48 weakfish, and 12 flounder. Jerry stopped by to show me some fo them, and they were pretty nice size. The' count came from him too, so take that as an angler's count (that means give or take five on each species). John Fisher also tole me that the Cape May Co.-Hatteras Anglers surf team is starting on their fall tournament tour. The first contest they will be fishing in will be up in Long Beach Island dt the Pennsauken Surf Angling club's annual affair. Next on the localteam’s fishing agenda will be a couple of Sunday spots along the coast, and finally winding up with a grand finale of a week’s fishing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the greatest surf fish of them all, the red drum or channel bass that is prized by true surfmen everywhere. I hope to be able to participate in some of this along with my friend Andy Grace. Next on our local fishing agenda after the inlets die out will be striper fishing in the Rips off of Cape May; and after the world record 78 pound striper taken by Albert McReynolds, of Atlantic Ci.ty, I look forward to a lot of
fellows trying down here as the stripers move South. This will- be my last column in the Herald. I wish all success to all the staff, and^close with t,h£ way I bpened five or six years ago. — "Allah does not deduct from Man’s allotted span of life, those hours spent in fishing." New Record Albacore?
CAPE MAY - A 71-lb. true albacore which measured 49 inches long may be a new world record in the 30-Ib. line class for a Philadelphia angler. John Przybyszewski boated his possible world record fish Sept. 16 while fishing aboard the Part ner's Choice with Captn. Jerry Crowley out of South Jersey Fishing Center. Weighmastcr Scott Knoff said that Przybyszewski was trolling a ballyhoo bait in Baltimore Canyon when the big iilbacore hit. It took 20 minutes to subdue the big fish. Also aboard were Howard Vcrmilye, the mate, and David Anderson and Michael Baker, both of Medford. The fish will be mounted as a trophy. It will also be submitted to the International Gamefish Association for consideration as a new world record to replace a 70-1b. albacore currently holding that honor. That fish was boated Aug. 25, 1974, at Cape Point, South Africa, by Geoff Sonnenberg.
