Bell’s 55th Birthday

NEWARK - New Jersey Bell marks its 55th anniversary of statewide operations tomorrow Sept. 30. The company was bom when the Delaware and Atlantic Telegraph and Telephone Co., Sept. 26. 1927, changed its name to New Jersey Bell and four days later purchased the assets of the New York Telephone Co. in northern and central New Jersey.

Until Uiai. time, the Delaware and Atlantic Telegraph and Telephone Company only served the southern part of the state. The merger resulted in the company’s becoming the 7th operating company in the Bell System with 12.000 employees serving 571.000 customers Today, there are about 30,000 New Jersey Bell employees ser-

'ving more than 6,619.000 customers. "Those statistics" noted Rocco J. Marano, New Jersey Bell’s president, "demonstrate how much more efficient we've become over the past 55 years, during which we grew from 47 .customers per employee to more than 220 customers pelemployee.”
