for over 200 years. Ir> the first years of settlement in New -Jersey, apple orchards were planted extensively and cider became plentiful and cheap. APPLEJACK. MADE by. distilling hard cider or fermented apple pomace, was produced as early as 1731 The hook goes into considerable detail about the processes used in the early days for making both cider end applejack, and illustrates these sections lavishly with photographs 'and drawings* of some of the mechaniams used in their product#n. Evidently, tnfe popularity of applejack continued to grow, and by 18^4 there wre 388 cider distilleries in New Jersey, some with stills of upwards of 1,000 gallons in capacity. New Season For Sorority LOWER TWP. -Xi Beta Tau Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority has begun its ’82-'83 sessions. The first meeting was at the home of Mrs. Sandra Bianco, who gave the program, Introduction to Communications. The newly elected president, Mrs. Mary Ann Santo, conducted the business meeting. Plans are being made for a hayride and "hobo" party. The chapter hopes to give Thanksgiving baskets again this year. Clothing for local elementary schools is also being collected at this time. Back To School ■MCltMA — The annual "Back To School Night" will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Richrd M. Teitelman School. All students will bring home a mini-schedule to be followed.
