Last year at Allentown, Middle Township lost out by a whisker to David Brearley High School of Kenilworth, a band it had beaten by a small margin in another competition a few weeks earlier. The taskmaster behind the Middle Township band is Richard Ludwig, now in his 11th season as director and instrumental musical instructor. Ludwig is a pro fessional trumpeter and has played in some of the best dance halls on the east coast. He also was with the house hand at the Steel
Pier.
•‘We paid oar dues and we took our lumps," Ludwig, said of ms marching band. “WeRgchieved success, but i!«iidn’t come quickly." ** When Ludwig took over in the 1972-1973 school year there were 45 musicians and baton twjrlers. Ha* eliminated the twirlere Immediately because he felt they were prima donnas and he placed them in the dance line. Now he has 65 musicians’, 24 flag twirlers, a dance line of 24 and 1 managers and alternates numbering 25. "We make everybody in the band realize what they are doing is as important as y any other school activity'" Ludwig explains. "We instill a sense of pride in them and we don’t let them take it easy. I push harder now than I did 11 years
ago”
The turning point of, the band's ascendancy came in 1978 when it won the South Jersey championship of the "Tournament of Bands” * league of which it is a member. In 1979 it finished s e c o n d a n d then catapulated'back to the'top spot again in 1980 and 1981. When it barely lost to Brearley High School last year, it was in a field of 27 nands from New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia and Maryland. The band has won other prestigious awards, too. Last year it flew in a barter plane to Louisville, where it finished seid runner-up with a rage score of 93.7 in the -ientucky Derby Parade. It is the defending grand champions of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Parade in Canada. Of all tne awards, Ludwig is most proud of the plaque presented by the governing body of Middle TawnsmfPTo him, the meritorious award means more than the 200 or so trophies and plaques the band has won. The band works virtually ear to bring its performance to perfection. Ludwigf who also is district department chairman for Middle Township, gives much credit to the Board of Education for its support, especially for an BrqbitiOifs summer program that occupies band members’ time five days a week He also has a hard working core of about 10 band parents who strive to raise moneys for the band’s travels. Ludiwg is quick to add that the band boosters could use more physical support from other parents. Fund raising activities take place all year long and a major one is an antique and crafts show in March. One of the biggest in this

area, it attracted 2,500 people last year and the band
made over $4,000.
The genial band director .turns into a disciplinarian when he turns on the
music. In his office is a sign that tells it best, it says: “Rule 1—The band director is always right. Rule 2—If the band director is wrong, see rule 1.”

CHIROPRACTIC FOR BETTER HEALTH

The human spine was not designed to endure abuse. Excessive strain, caused by lifting, twisting, falling or other unusual ,usage, may cause the vertebrae which make up the spine to slip slightlv out of place and to stay there. When misalignment occurs, the nerves that pass through the hollow vertebrae are pinched and irritated, preventing normal nerve function.
This is the basic cause of pain in the lower back, nips, shoulders and even the legs. ometimes, a misalignvertebra will reposition itself "accidentally" but professional chiropractic treatment is far more certain.
