Summer’s Reprise
Thousands Expected at Ninth Victorian Weekend
By Jacob Schaad Jr.
CAPE MAY - Albeit a few weeks late, summer will sound its last hurrah here from Friday through Monday when Cape May celebrates its ninth annual
Victorian Weekend.
The weekend, a major fund raising event of the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts, is expected to draw at least 5,000 visitors, seeking a reprise of summer, from all sections of the East. This year's event may well outdo itself as the MAC and other organizations have scheduled a myriad of activities rHIia^ ing from drama to music^ films, lectures and tours of this resort city’s majestic
Victorian houses.
Chairman of Victorian Weekend is Frederick Kuhner who was a founder of the MAC in 1970 and was its first president for three years. It was in 1973 that the weekend celebration began as the MAC’S major fund raising event. It was preceded by other fund raisers such as a Halloween party and the Vic-
torian Fair, both of which still exist. / Kuhner says that since its inception Victorian Weekend has grown each year to the point where many the businesses, which formerly closed right after Labor Day, now stay open until Victorian Weekend is over. Major newspapers in the East devote considerable space to the event, Kuhner points
out.
WHILE THERE are many highlights this weekend, the piece de resistance is expected to be a Saturdayijnight Victorian entertainment dinner hfep at the Colonial Hotel at $20 a person. Featured will be the authentic Victorian music 'of the H.B. Smith Cornet Band which received an enthusiastic reception at the Cape May Rotary bandstand this summer and is being brought back for this event by special demand. The band, a unique nine member enserft^le which has captured the ambience of the Victorian era with a
mellow brass sound that includes Gay Nineties music, was founded over a century ago and is comprised of professional musicians whose collective background include the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philly Pops, Philadelphia Opera Company and the Pennsylvania, Ballet. Featured is singer Winifred Dettore who has sung with major opera companies. Following dinner, music for dancing will be provided by a Dixieland
band.
In the field of drama, the Jersey Cape Performing Arts Center will bring back memories of Lillian Russell, one of America's most celebrated and glamorous tufn of the century stage stars, when itpresents Elaine Kuracina in her widely acclaimed one woman show, “'Lillian Russell in Concert,"'in the City Hall auditorium at 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. MISS KURACINA has performed "Lillian" at the Lincoln Center and New
York’s famous Luchow’s Restaurant where Lillian Russell and Diamond Jim Brady tried to outdo each other in eating oysters Tickets are priced at $4 and may be reserved by calling
