TRENTON - The New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife believes state bow hunters may have set a new record for an opening day. Based on random samplings of mandatory deer check stations, the Divisioifs Bureau of Wildlife Management estimates that 760 deer:were taken on the opener, Oct. 2. THE PRH^IOUS record for Opening Hay of .the fall bow‘season was set in 1980, when 731 dee^ were taken. Last year, “the harvest dropped off considerably, with 593 deer reported on opening day. The bureau estimates that about 35,000 huntdrs took to the fields and woods for opening day, and that there were several outstanding deer taken. ONE HUNTER in Burlington County checked in with a six-point buck weighing more than 200 pounds, and there were reports of many fine antlered bucks being
taken
The division reminds hunters that again this year they will be allowed to take a second deer, providing they request a second deer tag at the time they brtng their first deer to a checking station. This second tag will allow the hunter to hunt for a second deer beginning on the following day. The fall bow season runs through Nov. HUNTERsl&tE also reminded to m sure they tag their deer^s required by law and to qlsure to use the fall bow season tags. Any legally killed deer which is recovef*ed too late to be brought to. a check “ station by closing time must be immediately reported by telephone to the nearest Division law enforcement district headquarters, and the deer must be taken to a checking station the next open day to receive a legal Fall Fishing /RENTON - While fall is the traditional time for football and hunting, the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife reminds sportsmen not to overlook fishing, which improves considerably now that cooler weather has arrived. This time of year, the algae decreases, the water becomes clearer, and many fish turn to active feeding to build up their reserves for the winter. THE BUREAU of Freshwater Fisheries said there are probably more catchable fish during the fall than during any other time of the year. Especially good now are walleyes in the Delaware River, both large and smallmouth bass, yellow perch and pickerel. Trout fishing is also improved this time of year, as 'awning time approaches for\bpth the brown and brodk trout. Large trout anymore readily caught in the reservoirs. The time from September through November in New Jersey provides soghe of the best -fishing the state has to offer, and anglers will miss out on 3omc good action if they dpriilr^ke advantage of itVAnd, besides the fish, the weather is usually good, there are far fewer fishermen, and the fall scenery is spectacular.
