EVERYTHING SEEMS to be coming up roses early in the semester at Middle Township High School. The football team is strong. The championship marching band never sounded better and may be heading for an Atlantic Coast title in November. And now the girls’ basketball team is getting into the act. News out of the high school is that successful coach Bill Penmtan will be leading his powerhouse team to Puerto Rico in January — a first for the school'and probably for South Jersey. It’s part of a reci|Jro*ay>asketball program between Puerto Rico and the states.^hd Penman Hopes that his Puerto Rican opposition, the Baldwin School of San Juan, will come to Cape May County in the 1983-1984 season. Baldwin is a private school with about 400 students and its team is coached by one of the coaches of the Puerto Rican Olympic team. ACCOMPANYING THE Panthers will be the boys team of Holy Spirit High School, Absecon. Each team hopes to play two games and to participate in one double header. The Middle Township girls werfe 21-7 last year and have back their first nine players. "I think this trip is a grqat opportunity for our school." Penman said, "in that we will be not only representing Middle Township High School and the Cape Atlantic^ League, but New Jersey and more, important, America as v

well."

IF THE PRO FOOTBALL strike has given you withdrawal symptoms, then here’s one sideline news that might help soothe your frazzled nerves. Did you know that the Steelers’ Franco Harris often visits Cape May County and has an interest in Wendy’s franchise on Rio Grande Avenue, Wildwood? Bill Brannau, coach of Philadelphia's St. John Neumann team that upset Father Judge High School in the first Beach Bowl game in Wildwood on Labor Day weekend, has a home in Wildwood Crest and often entertains members of the Rooney family who own the Steelers. The family dines frequently at Ed Zaberer’s Anglesea Inn. Mrs. Rooney, the story goes, visited the Brannau house and accidentally dropped her diamond bracelet that spells out her last name. It laid sparkling in the sun for many hours on the Brannau doorstep unnoticed by passersby until it was recovered. Brdnnau gives football tips to the Rooney grandsons and much of their footbalLpractice takes place at Wisteria Road and the Crest beach. Maybe furture Steeler stars? *

PSYCHOLOGY IN SPORTS is almost as much a part of the scene as the plays enacted in the athletic arena. The idea.is to show the other guys that you're better prepared than they before either of you become involved in actual combat. This practice even filters down to Little League Football. Cape -May’s successful Tornadoes, coached by Councilman Harry Gilbert, have a bus that transports them to and from games. When Cape May played Lower Township recently, the players from Lower showed up in an enclosed horse van. On the side of the van was scrawled: "You have the bus, we have the horses." Lower Township’s senior team then unloaded themselves and defeated Cape May. However, the younger players from the Victorian city won their game. THE BASKETBALL SEASON isn't that far off and two Ocean City High School players saw some pre-season action last Saturday night in a North Jersey-South Jersey allstar game played at Convention Hall. Atlantic City. Steve McElhenny. a 5-11 pojnt guard, and 6-3 center Jay Hannah each scored two points as the southern team fell to the north, 64-G2. The game preceded an exhibition contest between the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets. The * Sixers won, 93-91.
