by l.lhby Demp Forrest RIO GRANDE - A tangled patch of thorny underbrush behind a “house within a house,” secluded by a crumbling fence, now hides the final resting placed of members of the Hildreth family, several of whom died nearly two centuries ago. “I \ didn't even know the graveyard was here," said Al Flitcroft. of Erma,, a handyman dt the Winterwood Gift Shop. “This gives me goose pimples.” Al and I had set out on a late afternoon this week as the sun dipped low across the autumn landscape, fo trace the old burial ground. The ancient bedstones are surrounded by high weeds and twisted trees, alongside an old farm. SOME OF THE old headstones are sunken deep into the ground, the identities of the departed worn away by time. One headstone, that of Ephraim Hildreth. Esq., who died in 1841, lies falleryo%its side, nearby his wife Abigail, who died on Halloween eve, October 30. 1856. # A team of poltergeist investigators last year visited the Wintcrwod Gift ‘Shop op North Shore Rd. to document phenomena they.^ claim exist in the old house WitHin a house. In an abstract published by The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research they suggest kinetic activities such as ghostly voices, eerie footsteps on a 200 year-old staircase and' laughter coming from within empty rooms. WHILE THE apparitions can be believed or disbelieved, the Hildreth family home is still extant within the gift shop, including the original siding, shutters and windows, dating from 1722. Original crfpboards and mantles' display gift items as customers visit eleven different rooms on two floors, going up an angled staircase original with the house. Christmas music chimes

David married Elizabeth Ludlam, and established a plantation in Rio Grande where eight children were born to the couple. THE HOUSE was occupied by Hildreth descendants un| twentieth family BibltT recorded the births and deaths of numerous family members, some of whom were laid to rest behind the house. Children, stricken by perplexing fevers, died tragically and were buried behind what is today' a grove of persitomon. cherry and black walnut

trees.

Young brothers and sisters give company to one another in the overgrown family cemetery, including a Mary Hildreth, who died in 1787 at 15 years of age. The faint chiseling still evident on Mary’s headstone eerily predicts she "only died to live again." Rita Goldman, manager of the Winterwood shop, does not believe the old house is haunted although she once heard ‘voices’ in the oldest section of the house. “It was around the fall," Rita . remembers, perhaps c*lose to Halloween.
